Naomi
I've been using Photoshop for years now and Lightroom is meant to be easier, but I've just downloaded it and it looks intimidating. Up until now I've been using Bridge in combination with PS actions, but after a hard drive crash I lost everything and decided I may as well restart in lightroom and begin collecting presets instead. I've found a few freebies doing a forum search. But I really love the look of Snook, Huga, and Ruth's photos. They all have a great feel which I assume you all got using presets in lightroom? I'm after some presets that have that warm, dreamlike feel to them. Hard to describe, but google image is my friend: What are your favourite presets? I would love to have a good library to start with to see what suits my style. :) I've found a whole heap here (so many! don't know where to begin): http://www.thecoffeeshopblog.com/p/coffeeshop-actions-and-presets.html
tlc
I use LR but I haven't downloaded any of the presets, I just use the ones that come standard, or use the sliders to edit and add my own effect. Will watch with interest.
tlc
If you DL a preset does it automatically go to Lightroom or do you have to install it?
gapvic
You have to install it, but it's not hard to do :) . There are so many great free presets - just go mad downloading, play around with them, then delete the ones you don't like. I think Pretty Presets have a sale on at present. huga
As per above, download a few and adjust accordingly and save as your own. I will often create a preset for every shoot/wedding I do, it makes my life so much easier and my processing so much faster. Play with all the sliders, including the split toning. For warmth and dreamlike, obviously play with the tone sliders, but also decrease the contrast and add some fill light. If you shoot in RAW, try and find some specific to that, otherwise you'll find they don't look right. There is much more control in PS though, so you might find that challenging. huga
Oooh, I just bought cheap textures from Pretty Presets :D http://www.lightroompresets.com/products-page/textures-and-resources/retro-revival-textures/ ETA Not that it has much to do with presets Edited July 11, 2012 by huga
tlc
Hey I've got a question that is probly going to sound really dumb, how do you apply a texture to a background and not the subject? Would you have to do that in PS with layers? Or can you do it in LR?
huga
I don't think you could do it in LR. I do it in PS, texture over the top, adjust opacity and brush back off the subject.
tlc
Ah I thought so, thanks.
Naomi
I can't afford to buy presets at the moment, so I'll stick to what freebies I can find. But the Pretty Presets look soooo nice. I'm use to working with layers in photoshop, so I might test out the onOne plugin. See how I go. Huga, when you saw find something specific for RAW, should I only be downloading presets saying they are compatible with RAW? Because I often edit photos while they are in RAW. Here is the first photo I had a play with last night. He is our neighbours dog. A bit overdone maybe. Ha. huga
Try the jpeg ones, you might be able to adjust them. I just found they didn't really work on RAW. I like it. Just watch the vignetting and the blacks :)
tlc
Oh thanks I'll check it out!
Clicking Mad
I don't pay for any presets, and I have WAY too many b&w ones, not enough colour, slowly building up my own colour presets built around the ones I do have, or adding colour back to the b&w ones :D I learnt how to do all the downloading/importing and even textures through youtube, love those really short and simple vids for that sort of thing most of my presets come from presetheaven
