MishB Posted July 8, 2012 Share Posted July 8, 2012 (edited) I get a bit annoyed when I am very obviously avoiding/keeping my dogs attention on me/turning the other way to avoid a close encounter with someone and their dog and they seem to follow me with intent to 'socialise'. My boy isnt aggressive at all, but he is a big GSD and I do try to keep contact with people who's dogs drag them towards us to a minimum. Its been my experience that these are the ones Im going to have problems with, the others who we walk past normally I can let stop and sniff, no dramas. But its always the 'leash draggers' who say he just wants to say hello!!Then they give me a dirty look if my dog growls or barks.It would be funny to one day just run up to these people one day (without a dog) try smell their crotch and say 'what I just want to say Hello"' :rofl: Edited July 8, 2012 by Nariko Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I think i'm just having a bad day, was visiting friends driving back and there's a car driving towards me in the middle of the road...I avoided it and woke it up with a large beep of my horn. Because although there are so many other descriptive words in the english language that can be used somehow when you are feeling really angry they just don't seem to flow into the thoughts & out of the mouth :laugh: I never, ever say piffle when I hit my finger with the hammer or stub my toe & am in agony. It may be in my brain but what comes out of my mouth takes me by suprise me because I don't swear often. Moronic bogan is not so bad. GeckoTree Posted July 8, 2012 Share Posted July 8, 2012 I have had people walk a dog in my dogs face / personal space, I can't understand it either. I can speculate why they would do it. I personally wouldn't do it for any of my speculations. I would be feeling angry if I had to give my dog a quick tap/ check due to the actions of another and would also be angry of being accused of cruelty due to that persons actions. tlc Posted July 8, 2012 Share Posted July 8, 2012 (edited) Last time I did the polite thing and stopped for people and their dogs I got badly bitten as the passing dog lunged for my youngest boy, I stood in front to protect him and the dog got me instead. I don't stop while walking I just keep on going, if the other people's dogs are aggressive that's their problem not mine. Also I think stopping gives the dog/dogs time to focus on the passing dog/dogs. There is so many threads like this, If possible keep walking ignore others and their dogs! I saw a dog run full pelt to the end of one and shanghai Itself in the back of the head as the owner didn't have a strong enough grip, not to mention tying peoples legs up ninja style. Just my observation. I'm sure many don't have an issue using them though. I actually bought one once when I first had my dog, but the handle split apart in about 3 weeks. What a dud contraption! RiverStar-Aura Posted July 8, 2012 Share Posted July 8, 2012 (edited) I can understand the situation as I have two reactive dogs: Zeus who goes ballistic with excitement and Kirah who reacts because Zeus does (I'm positive she has NFI what she's barking at). I always step off the footpath as far as I can and start shovelling treats into both of them and quite a few times have had other owners bring their dogs over. I dislike having to tell them not to approach but it's hard. It's harder on my training too because Zeus is only reactive because he WANTS to go greet the other dog(s) and barks out of frustration because he can't. mixeduppup Posted July 8, 2012 Author Share Posted July 8, 2012 Yeah, Ammo is a hard case because he's not a submissive dog by any means but not dog aggressive at all and usually not reactive at all but this dog was quite insane, he's not a dog that will take treats on a walk and when he wants to do something it's hard to snap him out of it. His refocus word wasn't working and I think his guard dog behaviour kicked in as he was becoming defensive, it was a simple tap just behind the nose to get him to look at me, a two fingered tap, when he looked at me he got a pat and a "goodboy". I know a lady who used a flexi leash for her SWF, and wasn't quick enough to lock it in place one day and stood there holding one end while her dog went under the wheels of a passing car. Absolutely. These supposed 'boguns' don't realise that what they are doing isn't correct protocol with dog owners. Sometimes a quiet word in an non aggressive way will go a long way in education.
