have you tried doing it yourself? I use PhotoRec (free, at will donation) and it freakin' rocks. I've recovered stuff that was years old from cards that had been used over and over and over - no way should those files have been there. It's an awesome bit of software that everyone who takes photos should have, imho, coz it's not a question of IF but of WHEN.

Oh, and, of course, backups should be standard ;)

Thanks Kja I'll have a look at that. Shifting the pics off my computer onto the portable hard drive was my somewhat retarded version of backing up :o . Now I know that I should actually just copy them rather than cut them. I'm not too upset as I had put my favourite ones into the Blurb book.
