Steps To Take In Fostering

Recommended Posts

Hi

I keep seeing young kelpies needing foster homes. What is the process to help. we live on a property just out of bathurst we already have 3 working kelpies who work the sheep, agility, obedience etc. They live like normal pets we do put them in their runs at night just so that we can put the cats bowls at teh back door and no one eats it. When we know the meter is being read they are also in runs in casr the person doesnt shut the gate properly. We do both work full time but feel that doesnt jeopadise our dogs lives. How can we help these young pups. How much does it cost besides the usual food, vet bills etc is there cost we dont know about. Once in rescue how and where do you advertise. Do you rescue alone i read about a section ?? certificate where do you get that. Dont flame me for asking questions as this is my very first port of call so not sure of the right questions yet.

Probably best thing would be to find a rescue group and work with them - hopefully someone will come along with some suggestions for your area (I am in WA)

Find a reputable rescue that will offer support and help for you through the whole process of fostering, they will want to do a property check to make sure you can keep the dogs safely.

There are quite a few people here that foster so I am sure you will get lots of advice

Good on you for offering to help  you can never have enough foster carers

If you are set up well & familiar with the breed, as you obviously are, fostering can be a great experience.

There are lots of rescue groups and it's also possible if you are experienced to foster without a rescue group.

A warning..l, Some rescue groups have some pretty odd ideas about who is suitable as a foster carer or a potential home.

As far as advertising, most rescue groups will do it for you. I have mostly rehomed fosters I have had to people I know in the dog trialling community. The added bonus is that you get to see them regularly smile.gif

Yep, I second AWDRI and how fantastic of you to offer to give a working dog a second chance!

As for your other questions it really depends on the rescue group. AWDRI are based in Cairns but operate nationally so they will have different arrangements regarding the care and feeding of foster dogs. I think they advertise on their website and probably on Pet Rescue. Most individual rescuers and groups use pet rescue (www.petrescue.com.au).

For example with my rescue group (for shar pei) I am given good quality food for free which I supplement with yoghurt and chicken necks, chicken carcasses, sardines, and treats. All vet work is covered by the rescue group, as is medication. If I need food bowls, crates, bedding, collars, leashes or harnesses I only have to ask for them as well. The dogs are advertised on Pet Rescue and my first dog found a new family in 6 weeks and the second took two and a half months. I am now on my third foster dog.

Please be aware that not all rescue groups can afford to cover all the expenses my rescue group does. Because I think I'm getting off very lightly I try and do as many other things as I can to help out - cleaning days, making new beds, coats and adoption bandanas, and repairing things.

I see my job as a foster carer to get these dogs ready for a forever home. They may need their confidence boosted, lead training, to gain weight or confidence, identify their personality in a home environment and to be tested with other animals, kids, etc. This info can then be put on their Pet Rescue advert so a potential family knows whether the dog would suit their household before expressing an interest.

It is incredibly rewarding and there are so many amazing dogs out there who need new homes through no fault of their own.

Does AWDRI accept foster carers that work full time?

Would that be a problem for any rescue group? I'd hope not or that wipes out a big clientele.
