Hilton's
Hi, I am new to this website but am looking to adopt a Lagotto pup. I would like to know if anybody has any views on crate training a Lagotto. I am concerned as I work mornings and am thinking that a crate would keep the pup safe and also not keen on my home being chewed :-) Any thoughts as to how Lagotto`s adapt to this kind of training... Zug Zug
No idea - my standard poodle pup loved his crate from the day he arrived at 9 weeks old, but I had several weeks off work to settle him in and get him used to his new life. He has always slept the night in there. I think several hours during the day at that age - hmm I think the pup may be better off outside if you have a safe yard. Depending on the cold obviously, but I am thinking about the importance of getting your pup's house training on track.
persephone
Hi Any reason the pup can not be outside? Crate training is just that - training..and it takes some time to accustom a pup to seeing a crate as 'home' and to spend time in there. if you really have to leave pup indoors for hours ..you will need a puppy pen , where pup can play safely, and toilet in a specified area. IMO , crating a pup for hours is inadvisable for many reasons, especially developmentally , and also for toilet training . You can not expect a baby puppy to hold for hours .... and once they start toileting 'in bed' that is a very verty hard habit to untrain ..and just not fair. have a read of THIS THREAD it has good discussion, and I have put some links in. Jetpoint GSP
I agree with the others - crate training takes time but is really worthwhile, in the mean time your puppy needs a safe area to stay while you're out. I have recently acquired the Susan Garrett Crate Training DVD and I cannot recommend it highly enough, did wonders for the crate training of my pup and some retraining of my older girl.
