Jsk Posted June 21, 2012 Share Posted June 21, 2012 Ok so still deciding as to wether or not I want to get an ultrasound done or not. My mentor says its a waste of money, but I'm just not sure. If I was to get one done then what places would you suggest in the Ipswich region or Ipswich side of Brisbane? Also what sot of price am I looking at for an Ultrasound? SwaY Posted June 21, 2012 Share Posted June 21, 2012 Go the ultrasound - it's only money you are wasting if you see nothing. Approx $50-$150 every vet is different. The counts are not always correct as puppies can be counted twice, or absorbed at a later stage. Ultrasounds are good to tell you if they are pregnant as for the count anything goes there. \ It also gives you more time to prepare and get supplies, book for time off work etc. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It is always good to know if there is, none, one or many because one usually means a caesar, so you can be prepared. I have also seen some very convincing phantoms wiht bitches gaining lots of weight, getting milk and even going into pre-labour, all for nothing. With small to medium breeds, a good ultrasound machine and experienced operator, the count is usually no more than one puppy out at most. With large breeds having 10+ it is harder to count. The other benefit is if the ultrasound shows say 6 and you only get 2 then you know she has re-absorbed and can take precautions with the next mating. She is very fine built, first time & I am not sure if she will need a ceasarian or not. Not a planned mating as the boy was only 5 & a half months old & I didn't think he was capable. Wrong. Last time it was $80 I think so will see. Vets do vary in price so much. Unless there is a particular reason I can't see the point either. Have had singletons born with ease in my dogs & cats. If I had not ultrasounded my girl I would not have known she was having a singleton pup. My vet and I were able to manage her pregnancy based on the expectation of one pup and not say, six. Her diet and exercise was based on not allowing the pup to have the nutrients of a full pregnancy and therefore not growing so large as to require a C-section. She was easily born by natural delivery. One could easily have assumed she had lost any pups she may have been carrying based on her size and shape so I was happy to be forwarned of what was to come. With her next pregnany I was able to happily anticpate the arrival of three pups. Also my vet does not like to expose a pregnancy to x-ray just for a count. And, no, they don't always get it wrong. My vet was right both times. It's just that it becomes more difficult the more pups there are, and not every vet with an Ultrasound machine is particularly proficient at it either. I have had one performed by a general vet with a small portable machine and it told me not much at all and you couldnt really see much very clearly. Done by a repro vet on a great machine and for only slightly more dollars it was a whole lot more worthwhile. Much clearer, more to see and much more information. I can sort of see how someone may think it a waste of time if the former is their only experience of getting an ultrasound done. Our experiences: Manly Road Vet First pregnancy - they were able to tell me there were 6 puppies implanted but only 4 viable (no heartbeat) so they would be absorbed. Second pregnancy - I was told there were 4 puppies but 5 delivered. Big ultrasound machine intended for humans. Gerry at Greencross Did my last ultrasound and he said 2 puppies - she delivered 4. It seemed very unclear compared to the Manly Rd Machine. Xrays are not always correct either. Last bitch was x-rayed and told 9 but she delivered 11. Many breeders don't scan but will x-ray in the last week. I prefer to have a rough idea on how many puppies early on to feed the expectant mum accordingly. Last 2 pregnancies Phil has been spot on with the number of pups. I know some normal vets (not repo specialists) have machines and will do ultrasounds for about $50 however they will simply confirm the pregnancy.
