Flick_Mac Posted June 21, 2012 Share Posted June 21, 2012 Hi guys, I've been away for 2 weeks and am away for another 2 - usually my boys are looked after at home by a friend but my plans have fallen through and they are being looked after at another friends place (who is a dog trainer) and she has told me that Louie (my wei) is very anxious and unsettled. I realise I can't do a whole lot for the next 2 weeks (am looking at medicating him just to get him through) but once I'm back I need to address this anxiety. He was extremely anxious tonight when my housemate left, while I was still at home - and I have never seen him like that before so want to get my poor baby some help asap. Flick_Mac Posted June 21, 2012 Author Share Posted June 21, 2012 Thanks guys - Lavender girl - it's not a totally new behaviour, but an escalation of a more subtle behaviour - he's always been a highly strung dog with managed, mild separation anxiety. I am a final year vet student so have a pretty good idea about medication but of course will only be doing it in consultation with an experienced behaviourist, and then my vet who is able to dispense the appropriate drugs to me. (that's the loose plan anyway - need to make an appointment) My friend who is minding them at her place is also a dog trainer, but is reasonably new to it so there are a few people that have some idea about these things involved... Can you get any recommendations at the uni faculty? Jane Harper is the only one I see recommended here - but there must be others surely. I've had Cam for lectures before, but my gut tells me to go with someone who is recommended by a former client. I'll call/make an appt with my vet at uni tomorrow and will talk to her about it anyway. I also need a quick fix - this was never going to happen, but I'm away for 2 more weeks, so hopefully the meds (if my vet agrees) can be short term until I"m home and can focus on some training. There's also helpful & experienced dog behaviourists at the RSPCA Q'ld animal behaviour unit (one even has specialist knowledge about cat behaviour). They have a Behaviour Helpline which can be a starting point before face-to-face work, or may, in some cases, prove sufficient in itself. I used that service some weeks back & found it excellent. Different issues completely - more of a training session but the improvement we've had this afternoon alone is amazing I can't wait to see how we go as the coming days and weeks pass. She's absolutely wonderful with the dogs, my two girls loved her and she has a really good common sense approach, explains everything really well and the 'after sales' service is also great. We requested Grant's services for a different matter, but I believe he deals with all canine behavioural problems, which should include anxiety issues. ESCS Posted June 23, 2012 Share Posted June 23, 2012 I have also called upon Jane to help us with our tibbie who has issues with anxiety. She was brilliant. What I liked about her is the time and effort she takes in her assessment of the problems and the cause of them. She was very good at helping us to understand what was happening with our tibbie and trained us in managing his anxieties. She is always happy to provide advice and support even after we have stopped seeing her. Nothing is too much trouble and she has an encouraging and positive approach. Our tibbie went from being so fearful of other dogs that he would not want to leave the house ( and was also aggressive towards other dogs ) to being a happy, confident dog who now loves his walks. He can still be reactive when he comes across dogs he doesn't know but with careful management, we can now walk past other dogs without hysterics! We had to send him and our other tibbie off to Samford Pet Resort last week and it nearly brought tears to my eyes to see him go off happily with the carer. There were other dogs around and quite a bit of barking but it did not bother him one bit. Without a doubt, we would not be in this situation if not for Jane.
