A Lil Info On Mini Schnauzers

as others have said they aren't terriers but they will chase rabbits and rats etc! and tenaciously!

my boy has a good recall and is really good with my horses - he's one of the only dogs that is allowed on the agistment property where i keep my horses because he doesn't run up to them, bark at them, try to herd them, basically he just sniffs around the laneways whilst i feed etc and is happy to be tied up near the feed shed garnering attention whilst I ride. they are trainable and smart but they do get bored easily - but my boy has never been destructive.

when there isn't much stuff in his coat mine gets a brush about once a week, and a lot of dead hair will come out on the comb but other then that no shedding. when there are lots of bindis, dried leaves, spiderwebs etc i go through his coat everyday after he gets exercise. and he does get a lot of exercise, 30 mins on lead am and 1 hour off lead either at the horses or at the dog park in the pm. and he would take as much as you could give him.

they are robust, funny and up for anything. they are snuggly and must be around their ppl. i've found that my boy is most closely bonded to me but he is friendly with all of my family and many friends, though when he's had enough he'll just take himself off to bed and leave us be. he barks only at ppl entering the property/house - not even at the family of possums that live around/on/in my house!

i wouldn't hesitate to have one if i lived on a property because i do think they are trustworthy and fun and yet are fantastic inside dogs too.

and i don't think the white colour is really an option for you - there are only a couple in aus and were only imported here recently i think so a white pup would be hard to find! i have a s&p and i love the gunmetally grey he goes when his hair is growing out (and he has been clipped a lot because he is 5 now). i probably wouldn't get a black only cos i get enough of is he a scotty? already, a black would just increase this! but the black and silvers are cute!

Hi, my mini was put down a few months ago as she was 14 years old and she no longer was eating and was suffering from dementia and had some internal issues. She was a great little dog. A wonderful companion and family dog. She was purchased as a black and silver but when she was about 3, she turned to salt and pepper - I was warned that this could happen.

i didn't have her clipped in the traditional schnauzer clip as we have a farm and she would end up with burrs and grass seeds in her fur, so I had her clipped all over but left little eyebrows and a little beard. She was coated in winter.

People warned me that they can be yappy - but my girl RARELY barked in her life. I was hoping she would be a good watchdog, but no, not a murmur from her. She would get excited at the farm and bark at the bull and the other dogs, but apart from that, nothing!

She was a pleasure to own though she did suffer from epilepsy, something I understand that mini schnauzers are prone to. However the breeder should be able to let you know about that.

She was easy to train (very food oriented) and was a reliable little girl. Her recall was very good.

She loved people, loved other dogs and our cat. She was tenacious with birds in the yard and I don't know how she would have been with other cats. She loved eating cicadas and christmas beetles. She was full of energy pretty much up until the end and loved playing soccer - she would push the soccer ball around the yard for ages.

I'm not really into small dogs, but if I were to get another small dog, it would be a mini.

Lol the soccer thing sounds good. Both my kids play soccer have been for years and our smallest one will start team sports in soccer. The goldies have no interest in it my boy have a favorite white squeaky bone which he plays fetch with but thats it. Neither of the girls fetch youngest only runs after the boy when he fetches.

I've gone and got myself all puppy clucky LOL!

but at the moment am able to see that a pup would be far to much at the mo.

Waldo is a black mini-just over 12 months. We will recall back to me at the park away from other dogs and is in the tailing class at obedience. He is an absolute delight. He passed his hospital visiting test at 7 months and visits with me most weeks. He barks if something different is happening around the place. He is inside and loves company. He is a total cuddle freak. He is full of adventure and fun. I would never consider another breed. I would consider a black and silver.

I work out what he has been up to by looking in his beard! LOL

No, epilepsy isn't something minis are prone to, certainly no more then any other dog. It is a problem in the giants though

I am still waiting patiently for that Waldo obedience video! biggrin.gif When is his first trial?

I'll get onto filming Pippa at some stage. I finally got my act together and taught her to stand yesterday (shows how smart they are, she got it in 1 short session!), so we can start incorporating that into heeling practice at some point laugh.gif

Ah yes-must get a video going. I tried to do it myself but my handling was so bad. He is good though. I am trying to decide if I should wait until we are at a Novice standard or just go for CCD. If i wait then I am thinking of entering RallyO first.

Certainly isn't an issue in Australia ,In all the years of showing & breeding i now of 1 defiant case ,i have no doubt there are dogs around but certainly not an issue within the breed
