Chicken Frames

Recommended Posts

I am new to the use of chicken frames.Trying to convert a newly adopted dog from VIP chicken roll to a healthier alternative and it was suggested I use chicken frames. But I dont know how much to feed her.She is a healthy , slightly overweight active older cocker spaniel. The previous owners had her on the dog roll for years.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

She does love the half frames I have given her, and takes ages to consume them.

Hard to answer without seeing the frames. How much fat is on them? How much meat? How big are they? I could never keep my dogs slim when feeding frames. I find it's easier to maintain weight and keep coats good using a high grade biscuit, preferably fish-based. Taste of the Wild Salmon is good.

Hi, as above said but also depends what else you are feeding too. I give one and some kibble to my Shepherd. That's it for the day, and she doesn't get any treats or scraps due to stomach issues. So being a smaller dog, if you are feeding just chicken frames and nothing else she might need something else as well as half a frame. Best to monitor her weight and also if she seems really hungry compared to usual. I tend to monitor weight more then anything.

It does depend on lots of things :)

how old is the dog , and how are her teeth?

How active is she?

what is her weight like? How 'overweight' ?

what else is in her diet?

One a day is probably plenty. On the days we feed frames that's all ours get. I wouldn't necessarily say ours are active. They get a 30-60 minute walk every day but the rest of the time is spent mostly indoors snoozing.

My OH did some research and said they're full of nutrition and you shouldn't need to supplement them. I know breeders that feed frames and nothing else whose dogs look great.

I have a mini schnauzer, and I guess that's about the size of your dog, and he gets 1/3 of a chicken frame, or 2 chicken necks (just to give you an idea of quantity) in the morning. He does also get the meat part of his meal in the late afternoon. If she is taking ages to eat then I would cut it into smaller pieces for her and make it easier.

It is very hard to make a call on this one as frames can vary lots in size & what's left on them content wise.

Also the age, shape & fitness level your dog is at now. What else does he consume during the day?

I think it will be a case of half a frame maybe, monitor for a while, see how is your dog looking? & go from there.

If still looking a bit to heavy go to a bit less, if not enough maybe a handful of good quality dry food as well in the arvo perhaps :)

1frame per day for a cocker. If the cocker is getting fat after 2 weeks, reduce to 1/2. There is no need for any other food on that day. If the dog cant't/wont eat a full frame cut in half, and feed 1/2 frame.

Heaps better than dog roll!!

Thankyou all for your input and advice.

She gets a small handful of dry food in the morning and last thing at night, when she goes into her room, and a chicken neck mid morning.I give her her main dinner early afternoon. Her previous owners fed only once a day, early evening as she was put her to bed in a shed.

I am trying to change her habits of a decade gradually.

She is about 3 kilos overweight, very active, chases rabbits on the farm in the main yard and gets 2 - 3 very long walks each day around the farm.Races around on her own instigation to check out the home paddock each day at brake neck speed when she first gets up to see what new "smells" have come into the yard.

She looks good, coat shiny, eyes clear.

I am paying a lot of attention to her coat as she had skin iissues when she was much younger, but I feel now that may have been as a result of fleas.

For her main meal I have given her half a frame and a smal amount of dog roll, but she wisely chose just the half frame.

My GSD gets two a day, plus kangaroo meat and veggies at night.

Depends in the individual dog, but I would say a half frame would be about right.

Are you saying that she gets 2 handfuls of dry food, a chicken neck, half a frame and some dog roll each day? Sounds like quite a lot for a little dog.

I have active border collies and kelpies.

They get 1 each.

That is all for the day.

If that was my Cocker, I would prob give it 1/2 a day AND THATS IT.

if she is overweight, you really need to reduce the diet not try to introduce more food. Its good that she is active as it will help her lose the weight.

Putting dogs on a diet when they live in a controlled environment is so easy. They are not going to the fridge to comfort eat, they don't drive to the shops for takeaway, they don't cook bad things..... They are purely a reflection of what the owner gives...... Make a start for her own good before its loo late and try to give her a comfortable old age..... thumbsup1.gif

Thanks for the advice. I am cutting back, I just thought I should do it gradually, as she has had so much upheaval with her family leaving her, and her coming to live with me, I didnt want to make too many changes too soon. But I take what you say on board, I know the dangers of an overweight dog.

I will cut out the roll, and only give her half a frame a day.The dry food at night was just to help her settle for the night when she goes to her room to go to bed...and is only a small handful.

Wish some one would control my food intake for me.
