WExtremeG
My 9 month old GSD steps on my feet - how do I train her not to? I don't know if she realizes it or not, it's annoying as she's quite heavy and often has muddy feet. Lol Ideas please :)
Erny
Move into her space - purposefully and firmly, but not harshly or aggressively. Avoid and withhold the giving of any attention (including eye contact) in the process. Give her nice attention when she is standing next to you but with some respect for your body and space. RubyStar
I heard this is a dominance thing, what does everyone else think? My Millie steps on my feet a lot and she is rather dominant and demanding of attention. I do what Erny says, but it isn't solving the issue, unfortunately. Erny
Not necessarily the case. Depends on the dog and other things. To know a story, you need to read more than one paragraph. Same with dogs - you need to read things in context with other things to determine what the dog's 'story' is. Hope that makes sense. The strategy I give works in most cases - much depends on the delivery of the strategy and the consistency of its delivery. And the delivery style depends on the dog. Be careful the dog is not perceiving any form of reinforcement that you might be inadvertently giving. Edited June 6, 2012 by Erny

Thankyou- will try this.
Cosmolo
What Erny said. But i find it can be breed specific- certain breeds are alot worse than others even with all other things being equal. Labradors are one Rubystar : )

I am sure others have inadvertently trained their dog to do it too

Wanted her between my legs with each paw on my feet, but so far she can only do one paw at a time, bless She won't naturally stand on my feet, and she is quite submissive. Millie just stands on my feet when she jumps into heel position, particularly when she's OTT excited!

I am at a total loss as to how I trained it but my pup has started doing it too That is also assuming its not something hardwired into their thinking as they are mother/daughter but since the pups I haven't trained don't do it I am going to assume its me
WExtremeG
Millie just stands on my feet when she jumps into heel position, particularly when she's OTT excited! Yes, this is what Fenrir does this as well, (when she's greeting me also) it's like she's unaware of what her feet are doing. She bounces around so can't push her off as its a quick step on feet- bounce off. Occasionally she'll do it while we're doing heel work, so am yet to try. WExtremeG
Okay, We were practicing our recalls and got several chances to push her off- but this resulted in her jumping back, and then jumping up (at me). Not cute *shakes head*
Erny
You mean she steps on your feet at the end of a recall??? I would not do anything that could be considered unpleasant, a punishment, an aversive, when it is attached to a command compliance. Or perhaps I have misunderstood someone?
