tlc
Funnily enough the Samsung I had problems with was store stock, it was in the display case and they assured me all would be ok. The problem may or may not have arisen because of that but you just never know. I'll never buy a camera thats been on display again that's for sure! Really hoping my G1X comes today or tomorrow so I've got something decent to play with over the weekend. Had a good read up on the 7d last night, I'd forgotten a lot of what I had read previously, it sounds awesome. I'm still in two minds about which one but I've definatley decided I don't need the D700/800. Decisions decisions.........
tlc
Funny how soon you forget something, I went back through my topics to find my older one and HERE it is, not that I expect you guys to read all 4 pages but it was interesting how over time you change your mind so much. Huga do you have the D700 now or did I dream that, in the old thread you made a comment about that. I think I am going to have to hold off for a bit as I just can't make up my mind, I just don't know why I am being so fickle usually I just say thats what I want and when you consider that old thread is Nov 2010 thats a long time to be stuffing around trying to decided! One thing I did say in the old thread was I was going to keep my Nikon which I didn't its gone so what ever I decide it won't matter as all the nikon lenses are gone! huga
Yep, I have a D700 and a D300s (but I don't think they exist anymore).
tlc
My decision now is between the 7D and the D7000. I was like your friend and the mirrorless cameras are really great and take some amazing shots especially the ones with the APS-c sensors like the Samsung had in it. And the size is perfect and I will probly get a lot of use out of my G1X. But I just think you cant beat an SLR for Everythng really, speed, better in low light, more lenses = more options for different occasions. The list goes on. Do you mind if I ask what brand your friend got? It's interesting reading some of the photographers blogs with a lot of them adding CSCs to their kits for that grab and snap occasion. Probly I'm just greedy and want the best of both worlds! Your right about the D700 it's no longer in production. The replacment iis the D800. Rozzie
I have a D7000. It's brilliant.
tlc
Rozzie you writing so small I almost missed your post! Have you had your long? Any pics you wanna post? Snook, I looked at the pana when I got my Samsung, I really liked it but went with the Sammy cause it had the bigger sensor. The pana has a heap more lenses available which is great. kja
Maybe not being able to decide really is the universes telling you now isn't the right time. It shouldn't be this hard to choose, really :)
tlc
I know I really know it shouldn't, I just want to make the right decision. I think at the end of the day either which one I choose will be ok as they are both awesome cameras. I've downloaded some books for both and aim going to have a read of both, I'm not in a hurry at the moment so I'm hoping I will get a sign if some sort. I'm leaning towards the canon at the moment but who knows I will probly change my mind. I'm certainly having fun researching and at least I've narrowed it down to two. And my budget for the time being is set for $2000. Are you between flights now? When do you get to Bonaire? I'm so excited for your photos! tlc
Well Im up to doing a ring around to get some prices etc and geez salesman sure know how to put a spanner in the works! I told him I wanted prices on the Nikon and the Canon and he told me what I wanted to know but then went into a full spiel about how I should consider the D3200 over the D7000 and the 600D over the 7D as the 7D is now getting old He was quite cocky and he really annoyed me, I guess he is trying to do his job but I really felt like he didn't have a clue but only sounded like he did. I have been doing some reading about lenses and the whole thing is a bit confusing. I was trying to stick to a budget of around $2000 and i definatley want the 50mm 1.4 so I am tossing up which other lens to get. If I get the 7D which is the way i am swaying i like the 15 - 85 has anyone with a canon got this particular lens? Id love some feed back about it. Actually I would love it if the Canon people could tell me what lenses they have and which ones they love the best. :)
tlc
I definatley want the 50mm and I hardly ever used my zoom lens on my D80 it was a tamron 18 - 250, nice lens but I just never needed to use it apart from the occasional moon shot. You have seen most of my stuff on Facebook, I love action shots and also portraits and I have used the 50mm for both. I did think the 15 - 85 would give me a little bit of variety if i wanted or needed to get a bit closer to the subject which is usually a dog. But i may have to go with either the 18 - 200 or the 18 - 135. Id probably lean towards the 18 - 135. I know I will use the 50mm the most but just want to have a change if need be. and yes he was definatley a tool, don't think he had a clue but sounded like he thought he did!
Juddabug Whippets
Hey TLC, It depends what you use your camera for mostly. I use the 70-200mm f4 for capturing the whippets when they are racing and I have used it a little at work too. I love this lens! It is the non IS. At 8fps, and the high speed of my subjects I just couldn't rationalise spending the extra $700 for IS. I also find that I use the 50mm f1.8 also for catching the dogs zooming around the backyard where the 70mm doesn't allow me to get back far enough. It is also great for indoor shots. I have been tossing up for a while to get an in-between lens and also a big one! Thinking the 100-400mm for my biggie... but that might be a little while away yet. I got to play with Kirislin's 17-85mm and I quite like it... and am giving it some serious though. It was f3.6-5.6 from memory, or was it f3.6-4? But I always wondered if I did get a 17-85mm do I really need the 50mm? I have read that people like the 'primes' as they feel they shoot crisper photos... hmmmn, back to the books I go! :)
tlc
Well thats the thing, I think the more i read the more confused I get. I definatley want the 50 mm but something with a little more reach for the dog park etc would be good. I love taking action shots and the 50mm has been pretty good for this so far. Arghhh its all just to hard to know. I looked at the 15 - 85 but like you said similar to the 17 - 85 is it to much the same as the 50mm. I might be better going with the likes of 18 - 135, which I think comes as a kit lens, so I could get that and just add the 50mm. Or would i be better off with the 18 - 200 then I have that extra reach if i really want it?
Juddabug Whippets
LOL! See this is where it starts to get tricky!!!
MavericksMission
For my Canon 7D I have 2 kit lenses 18-55mm & 55-250mm and then 28-135mm, 50mm 1.8. I love the 50mm and the 28-135mm is quite a nice lens as well :) Edited June 10, 2012 by MavericksMission
Kirislin
If you get the 7D buy good lenses to go with it, not the kit lenses like the 55-250 I dont think it does the camera justice. The lenses I use most are the 70-200 I love that combo. I also use the 2 primes, the 50mm and the 100mm macro. As a sports camera I think it's brilliant. I love it. I dont do portraits or low light though. I dont know what it would be like for that. every one who has the Nikon seems to rave about its low light capabilities maybe that's what you want. tlc
The low light thing is not really an issue, I do want to avoid the kit lenses if I can but if it means the difference of having another option I might have to go that way if I don't want to spend any more money, if that makes sense? Possibly the 50mm and the 28 - 135 might be a good combo, more so than the 50mm and the 15 - 85? copied this bit from MMs other thread Thing is I love taking the portrait shots of the dogs but my passion lies with the action shots and i think the 7D will do both easily but it may do the action just slightly better than the D7000. Well thats what I am hoping! Edited June 10, 2012 by tlc

CrazyCresties
This is a link to my Flickr 'lens collection' sets with virtually all photos taken on my 7D http://www.flickr.com/photos/56265770@N02/collections/72157626519955153/ For portrait stuff I use the Canon 50mm 1.4 and the Sigma 17-70mm which is a fantastic lens. I have recently upgraded my zoom from the Tamron 70-300mm (which was great as a first zoom, with stabilization) to the Sigma 2.8 70-200mm. For macro stuff I have the Tamron 2.0 60mm which I just love! So if you have a browse you'll see a range of subjects both stationary and action, and I can't fault the 7D at all for what I use it for. POTN will have loads of images from photographers far more competent than me if you want to see what the camera can really do! Good luck deciding :D eta - I don't do much in poor light, but I was pleased at how well this came out at iso 1600, exposure 1/250 no flash - Edited June 10, 2012 by CrazyCresties
Juddabug Whippets
I love the 7D, I know I'll upgrade to the new 5 Mark III in a while, once they iron out the gremlins!
tlc
I'd never ignore you I appreciate the input, it's been great and I'm close to making up my mind although my OH said oh you will change it again. I agree with what you are saying for sure and the only reason I would have went with the camera with a kit lens was for a little length had I have needed it for something. But on rethinking the whole thing this evening this is the plan so tell me what you think.... 7D body and 50mm 1.4 lens for the time being, that's basically my budget as I also have to get new memory as all my other stuff is SD. how annoying I just got two 16 gig high speed SD cards too! Anyway what I thought was the 50 mm will be awesome for most stuff I want to do and I can save up for a better lens down the track and don't forget in the meantime If I am anywhere that I need a little bit of length I will have the G1X which should be here next week! CC thanks for the links, you have some awesome photos on your flicker pages, I especially liked the 50mm stuff, just lovely! Question, once I take pics with a compact flash card do I have to plug the whole camera Into the computer or can I get a compact flash reader? I have a feeling I may have asked this question but forgotten the answer. I should just google! Snook did you get 8 or 16 gig cards and are you filling them up quickly? I think Kirislin shoots in Raw most of the time, what about others, I haven't shot in raw hardly at all mostly jpeg and mostly cause I haven't got a clue what I'm doing! I've just got aperture for my MacBook so I will have a play with that when I get a chance.
