LizT Posted May 29, 2012 Share Posted May 29, 2012 Just after some others experiences and thoughts on this. When I took my three newborns to the Vets for their post natal check up. Whilst chatting, the Vet told me this. He said that firstly, I should take this with a grain of salt. The puppies were very well but at that time they had rather reddish faces and feet, I thought this was a normal translucent look in the newborn to tell the truth. He told me that their is a "school of thought" that this is indicative of "Low Blood sugar". However, as my pups had good muscle tone and were happy and content he certainly did not think this was the case. He told me if they appeared distressed at any point to give a few drops of glucose. I noticed in the first 24 hours that their faces and feet "pinked" up and looked normal. I'm pretty sure, most of my newborns have had that reddish look to their face and feet. All have had good colour to their tummies and good muscle tone with no consecutive problems occurring re low blood sugar. Your thoughts? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

oakway Posted May 29, 2012 Share Posted May 29, 2012 Your puppies sound very normal to me. All mine are born rather red and I have never had a problem with them no matter what the breed. And in healthy normal pups it rights itself very quickly as they adjust to life outside the womb? I can't recall what the parti colours looked like in the last litter or if the colour toned down. ellz Posted May 30, 2012 Share Posted May 30, 2012 I don't think I've ever NOT had a litter with pink faces and feet, particularly noticeable in lighter coloured puppies. Or maybe nothing at all. It might just be the birth process. Though I have remembered all my parti's have been born by c-section so what impact would that have? Interesting discussion. When we lost a pup last november the pink fading as she was dying Hilaryo, it is when the face and feet are quite reddish and almost looks like blood under a translucent skin. Yes, that's a nice healthy pink. This was more like a sunburn type reddness. I don't have a photo unfortunately as they were pink at birth and pinked up later on in day 1 and have stayed that way. But they definiely were a darker colour on face and feet (tummies were pink)at the vet visit the morning after birth. ETA. Just thought about it and the puppies were in a small box with heated gel pads to keep them nice and warm. Perhaps they were running a bit hot at the time? They were all like that to start with, I had a friend who is a vet nurse there and she didn't mention anything about. Jazz whelped the 9 herself, none really needed any help to get going (just the last unexpected 1 I had to swing a couple of times) and all fed easily and were strong and active. They were vet checked the next morning (first born would have been about 13 hours at that point and the last pup about 5 hours) by a repro specialist and there was no concern with them at that stage so I never really thought anything of the colour and like you just thought it was normal. saradale Posted June 13, 2012 Share Posted June 13, 2012 I had a small litter born a couple of days premature earlier this year. Both pups had very red extremities, vet said it was due to their vital organs being slightly underdeveloped and not getting blood pumped effectively to their paws, tip of tail, etc. One pup came good after 12hrs, the other was looking much better except for one paw which went redder, then purple and got blood blisters on the paw and the paw literally died.
