neon Posted May 27, 2012 Share Posted May 27, 2012 Hello, I am a current Veterinary Nursing student and I need some help from any Vets/Vet nurses out there :) I have an assignment on Pyometra surgery and am having difficulties finding the required information. I noticed someone else posted on here last year with the exact same problem, but unfortunately the answers were only given via pm. So if anyone could help me it would be greatly appreciated!!! The questions I need to anser are: 1/ What surgical instruments are used during a regular pyo surgery? Any specialised instruments? 2/ What drugs for anaesthesia are usually used? pre-med etc... 3/ What is the length of hospital stay on a routine pyo surgery? 4/ What are the roles of the Vet nurse during the surgery? I have to use only Australian references and most I have found are UK or USA based. Even my text book is from the UK, so it makes it hard. All I can find is take home info etc. Found an awesome site which explained the surgery etc but I cant use it as its from the USA, so I cant reference it such a pain! And to answer your statement...no we havent been taught specialised instruments yet, otherwise I wouldnt be asking. Also its not a quick search as I was searching for 2 hours last night. Yes I can find fact sheets on take home care or a real basic run through, but nothing specific. Please not respond if your just going to be negative, is that too much to ask? Kavik Posted May 27, 2012 Share Posted May 27, 2012 OK first search pyometra and find out the surgery that is performed, then search for that surgery (it is routine and easy to find information about if you haven't studied it yet) - that should tell you the specialised instrument at least, probably the anaesthetic and premed as well. The student who wrote on here last year...including really basic questions which were easy to answer got nothing but help. No smart asses trying to make a point. I think.....actually thats a really great way to talk to a vast selection of people in the industry all at the same time... well I was wrong. I know what Im looking for in my searches...you dont, so please dont try and make it sound easy, as you dont even know what your looking for. I dont work like that! I gather heaps of info from all different sources and then pick the best info for my work and always give credit where its due. Follow Kaviks advice so that you learn how to do effective searches. I quite often do a fair amount of searching just to come up with the right search terms to find out what I want. So focus on what terminology you are using- more technical terms plugged into google scholar will give you different results to lay terms in a normal google search. Have been tempted to change my disease/surgery as I seem to be getting no further into the actual surgical procedures..specific. I guess Im just getting frustrated. I have searched periodicals, medical papers, and everything relevent is not Australian. Staff'n'Toller Posted May 27, 2012 Share Posted May 27, 2012 Sorry neon, it's actually generally great around here so stick around hey. :) I understand what it's like when you're a 'junior' in a Vet Clinic, often there's no-one with enough time to help and it can be a bit intimidating to ask. Particularly if you're only there part-time. For some reason the curriculum is and has always been set out in a way that you need to know full sets of surgical instruments before you might have even been let loose in surgery. :laugh: Seems bizarre.
