Dancing With Dogs Freestyle & Heelwork To Music

Hi Schatzi's Mum, Welcome and please post.

If you have any brags, ideas, questions ask away as I am sure that the lovely people here will help you.

I too, have only been in this sport for a short time as I started last year at the Melbourne Royal where I gained a pass in both Freestyle and HTM started. I had started another thread last year but the title only stated HTM, looking for music ideas, but decided that the topic didn't really include everything. Hence the new thread.

What music are you dancing too? And where is your comp?

Thanks Kallistar :) Our comp is at Camp Tailwaggers, looking forward to it :) Schatzi and I have been dancing for about two years now, but have only managed to get to two comps in that time. At our first we got our F/S Starters title, then our second we got out HTM Starters title. She also has one pass in Novice F/S.

I'm hoping we can do a few more comps this year, unfortunately we live about 500km in any direction away from dancing comps so it takes a lot of travel to get to one.

I'm doing three routines at the upcoming comp. Schatzi is doing Novice F/S to "Don't Hold Back" by the Potbelleez, Novice HTM to "Don't Rain on My Parade" from Glee and then Tora is doing Starters F/S to "You've Got the Love" by Florence + the Machine.

My music choices can be a little left of centre, but I like it that way :laugh:. The last time we did "Don't Hold Back" someone said "Why did you choose that song" and my reasoning was "I wanted something with a slight Spanish feel to it - without it being an obvious music choice".

Hope that you post your results here for all of us to read about when you do compete. At the moment I am stuck as the songs I would like to do, the costumes are not what I want to do right now. Like Sounds of Music's a few of my fave things, Somewhere over the rainbow ect. Has anyone got some costume suggestions for them that doesn't involve a skirt?

I will keep on looking for the next week.. but time is running out as the entries for the next comp closes soon

@ sheena - thanks so much - unfortunately I'm going up the inland way, and then coming back fairly fast - one stop near Coffs, then on to my former training/trialling friend's place in Southern Highlands for a couple of days before heading to Albury's Rally trial.

Schatzi's Mum - I feel your pain about distances to comps - I have to get over Bass Strait - and I don't like flying with dogs - so 300 km to the ferry, then overnight on that - big $$$ and time.

The music I would like to dance to is Abba, especially Dancing Queen, but I can't imagine big old, large, me being dressed like Abba...maybe I could just dress the dog. :laugh:

Tassie, The lace gloves are a pain as they caught on everything, and I can't find the partner of the long black satin glove that I have. And if you come back across the waters for the November comp, you might be just lucky to see it again. So think about it ok.

The first thing that comes to mind costume wise from Sound of Music is them making clothes out of the curtains... but you could wear lederhosen? Or be a brown paper package tied up with string (i.e. brown clothes with a string type bow)?

What about just a sparkling top that goes just pass your bottom (like a mini skirt effect), pin it so that doesn't flick into your kids' face? Along with pinstriped pants. A headband with a flower on it And there you have your costume.

Can you enlighten me on who Sandra Davies is? See told you I am new into this.

What exercises are you doing to help strenghten your dog's muscles so that she can walk safely on her hind quarters?

No I can't tell you who she is because I know very little about this too. I did google her & she has put out quite a few training DVD's & there are Youtubes on her dancing her dogs. Exercises for strengthening her back legs???? Nothing in particular, just rear end awareness exercises, daily swimming & agility...should I be doing something more specific ATM I only stand her for about 3 or 4 goes & for about 1 1/2 seconds each time, once a day.

Exercises for strengthening her back legs???? Nothing in particular, just rear end awareness exercises, daily swimming & agility...should I be doing something more specific ATM I only stand her for about 3 or 4 goes & for about 1 1/2 seconds each time, once a day.

I was just wondering if there is anything special that you do to help strengthen her back and legs that might help all of us who tries this move. Rear end awareness is great as is swimming :)

I must admit that the last comp that I did, I forgot to warm up/cool down Tux's muscles and we paid for it as he was a bit sore the next day. But a quick rub down and he was feeling a bit better by the end of the day .

I don't think Shandy & I were the stars; I've been pretty slack on her training recently, and she's had some minor joint problems, which has further compounded the issues, as does training and competing in Obedience and Rally-O. My friend and regular training partner has two very flashy and enthused borders though!

We've been basing some of the work for beginners on Illona's book, which is useful, plus some solid rear end awareness and trick work, mixed in with some basic choreography. We're still feeling our way, but having fun with it, and our beginners seem to be enjoying it too!

For 'Over the Rainbow' why not just go for a rainbow coloured outfit? A nice flowing tunic style top in a gauzey fabric, and a matching bandanna for the dog would look pretty.

Jarrah got his Intermediate freestyle title in November last year (thank you to Judge #2 BC4Me for my perfect 20/20 for musical interpretation! ) & we haven't done any work at all until this weekend because we were away for 5 weeks at christmas in the UK & I have been very slack. But I put in my entry on Friday for Advanced Freestyle at the Royal in August, so I thought I had better get myself organised & do some work. :laugh:

I went to see a friend today to get some ideas for my new routine, she told me she didn't think I needed help :laugh: , but I convinced her that I did & now I have so much stuff to learn it's scary . I will keep you posted on how it's going.

I'm heading off to Camp Tailwaggers tomorrow for a week-end seminar with Steve Austin.

Steve was a fantastic presenter, thanks Maree for suggesting that we should go & see him .

And also to be going back to see Kamal

I presume he's going to Victoria then, not that you're coming to Qld?

I'm a relatively new convert to DWD, our third comp is coming up in a week and a bit. Got one white shepherd girl in Novice and my youngster making her debut in Starters FS

Hiya Schatzi's Mum, don't know if you remember us but we met you when we were doing herding & we went to a trial at GI. Hubby has a GSD & I have a red kelpie, a sheltie & a BC (she was only a puppy when we went to GI) .

Robyn your routine had some lovely choreography and I thought your interpretation of accents and beats was brilliant.

Steve Austin is a wonderful presenter and well worth going to see glad you took my advise to come along for the week-end.

I'm looking forward to judging again on Sunday. For those going it is freezing at Camp so take all your winter woolies :D

She is still managing the occasional obedience round and actually seems to be a lot more feral and switched on then she was when she was younger.

So do I dust off her old Surfin USA routine or try and come up with something new. Will certainly be going for minimum length time on the routine this time though.

Still hoping I may be able to have Kenz ready to do at least a HTM routine but will see what the specialist says it might not be far enough through her rehab.

She could still do all of it I think . Whether she wants to is an entirely different story . She is very much a whats in it for me :laugh:. Yeah I still have the music - its sitting in my itunes library. Actually toying with trying the routine with Kenz when she gets to novice or intermediate .

:-) puppy no longer except in his boy brain. 3.5 years old. Ch,TD,ET,RN 2/3 RA and 1/2 Starters HTM and GA. Busy boy!

We did a DWD demo at a local dog day out, and the local paper photographer got some lovely shots of Shandy, especially a series of her doing her Cop-cop, balanced up on my feet.
