Rilla-My-Rilla
We feed our dogs on the BARF diet, not the bought patty type, the make-the-vegies-yourself-type, with chicken wings and all.... Anyway, in this cold weather, I'm feeling a bit mean dishing the dogs up a bowl of cold vegies and yoghurt, and cold chicken wings. I can't add boiling water, as that will lightly cook the vegies and defeat the point of raw... So I was wondering if any other BARF feeders have a way of serving the dogs warm food without cooking the vegies? It's just so cold here in the morning and evening, that I know I wouldn't enjoy cold food and they probably would prefer something warm too...they do seem to like it better on the odd occasion that they get leftovers...since these are already cooked, I warm them up for them.... Probably a bit of a silly question, but thought I'd ask anyway.... Hope it makes sense! S.
minimax
What about room temperature, would that make you feel better, rather that cold from the fridge? You could get the veggies and wings out the night before to "chill out" a bit? Honestly, I don't think the dogs mind. Mine doesn't stop long enough to chew, let alone feel the temperature of her food ;)
BCPuppy
HaHa still too warm here to leave food out for long. I agree I dont think that they mind cold at all but then mine isnt fussy.:D Mind you we quite often give ours a 'gravy' made by swishing a little water in the frypan when we have cooked our meat in it to disolve any juice and bits left, letting it cool a little and pour over her meat, she thinks it is something quite special Edited May 14, 2012 by BCPuppy
Mason_Gibbs
I heat mine in the microwave for a few seconds to make it a bit warmer I stop before it starts to cook
Rilla-My-Rilla
Thanks for the replies everyone... You're probably right, Minimax, it worries me more than them lol. Only one of them eats her food daintily enough to notice the coldness, and on especially cold nights I'll jut heat up some gravy and had it to her food. She always sniffs her dinner suspiciously, to ensure that you haven't put any thing 'nasty' (like celery) in there. She'll like the gravy.... espinay2
A bit of warm water or low salt broth in the food is not going to matter. With veggies, you puree them to break down the cell walls. Cooking does the same thing. Just as with our food 'nutrient loss' is caused by over cooking (as most of the good stuff is thrown away in the water). You will not lose any nutrients if you are just adding some hot water to the food to heat it up a little. Besides, veggies are an 'optional extra' anyway. You can bring RMB's to room temperature (I generally leave them out for the day to thaw in a container in cooler weather so they have generally reached room temp by feeding time anyway). Or put them in a bag in some hot water for a while to bring the temp up. Mine dont really mind them cold, or even frozen, if that is how they come though so I personally dont go to any effort (only enough to separate them if I have forgotten to thaw).
