Alibi
I have been researching the next dog to add to the family and am stuck on either a pug or boston terrier. Does anyone have any experience with the bostons? There seems to be alot of conflicting info on them about how they are with other dogs, some say great alot says not so great. My sister has a 2.5kg very sweet chihuahua that the pup would be baby sat with some of the time so it has to be dependable with other dogs and preferably other animals. I will be seeing some bostons on saturday to actually meet in real life and get a better feel for them but any info would be great!

Temprament wise, Pugs and Bostons are sort of similar. Both are velcro dogs and would react to other dogs depending on how you raise it/train it and its own individual personality! kiesha09
From the one I know well I'd say a Boston!!! My OH's sister has one which we babysit regularly. He has the most amazing personality and is so so friendly. He loves my dogs and fits right in. Best of all he doesn't seem to shed much hair
huga
I'd actually say Pugs and Bostons are quite different from each other. There is a huge difference in their shedding too.
Nevafollo
Yup, I doubt you would go wrong with either! both wonderful breeds... Boston shedding would be different to Pug shedding thou, Pug shedding can be excessive bostons not as much so!!! Pugs are easier to come by! In the end I think it will come down to which breed you prefer and what pupp yu fall in love with
juice
I have no idea ( so correct away), but being a terrier, wouldn't the Boston be more energetic? Pugs shed heaps i have heard. I like Frenchie's :D
megan_
Bostons are also rare so that should be factored in IMO - you might be waiting a loooooong time (years?). Worth it if that is what you want
Bluefairy
My last choice of breed was the Pug, Boston or French Bulldog. There were all what I wanted in a dog, but Archie came along at the right time, so I got Pugged instead. Yes the shedding in Pugs is something to go at, but if its not that big an issue, then go Pug, if it is then go Boston. I think any dog will like other dogs, so long as they are socialised well and get used to them being around. Archie had never been around kids while I have had him (not sure about his breeder), but he loved them, he was more calmer than I expected and seemed to love them. However my granddaughter was terrified of Archie, but I think it was his face that scared her its only a face an owner would love Lynn
megan_
Sorry but I disagree that any dog will like other dogs as long as they are socialised. Breed and breeding play a very big part in this.
minimax
My pug doesn't shed much at all. Some say blacks shed less than fawns, but everyone warned me about the shedding and I sit back laughing coz there is hardly any hair in my house
LizT
"Apples and Oranges" The Boston is a terrier I believe the Pug is...well a Pug. And then there is the question of Fawn or Black (Pug), of which I have also heard personality differs greatly. :) Not forgetting also that each dog is an individual too. You will definitely find a pug easier to come by, and dare I say it, perhaps more to budget (if that's an important factor?) Both are lovely, sweet companions. LizT
Sorry but I disagree that any dog will like other dogs as long as they are socialised. Breed and breeding play a very big part in this. Agree. Some breeds like Lowchens and Cavaliers are highly social animals. But whatever breed you get the odds of it getting along with the Chi are increased with the newcomer being a puppy and spending a good deal of time in each others company. Clyde
I'd actually say Pugs and Bostons are quite different from each other. I agree, totally different breed traits. If you want something sparky and terrier-ish get a Boston, if you want something affable with a sense of humour get a Pug. FWIW my Pug doesn't shed at all. He is a black, single coat - I thnk shedding would tip me over the edge with all his other quirks
rusty&biscuit
I love both breeds, but am partial to bostons. After meeting one I just loved the smooth sleek coat, and she was great with my boy Biscuit and a real cuddle bug too. Had quite a spunky littl personality as well...definately on my 'to own' list! Just sharing my experience with you, havn't shared much time with pugs
oakway
Bostons are not in the terrier group (Group 2) they are in the non sporting group, (Group 7). They are both great little dogs. Only you can decide which one will suit you and your life style best. :)
Whipitgood
A Frenchie! Both Pugs and Bostons are fantastic, i would own both (and a Frenchie!). Good luck in your search and photos of your new baby are a must!
Kirislin
I know a woman who breeds Bostons and I was surprised at how athletic they were. They could leap into her arms straight up like my Feather whippet does.
Alibi
Thanks guys. The shedding of the pug doesnt really worry me as i figure with my hydrobath and a furminator i may be able to make it not so bad. Im really finding it hard to choose. I have spoken to some lovely boston breeders and it seems it may not be a very long wait depending on sexes in litters. I guess i worry about the quite large amount of negative feedback on the bostons on the net in regards to their temprement with other dogs. I really love the frenchie as well but worry about any health probs.
huga
What makes you think Frenchies have anymore health problems that the other two?
