Staffyluv Posted April 27, 2012 Share Posted April 27, 2012 A few years back on a flight I was asked to put my laptop (in a soft case) in the overhead compartment instead of under my feet. I protested but was assured it would be fine... Well it wasn't, it was damaged and as I didn't have travel insurance and could not prove that my LCD screen was not already damaged, I had no claim... I have a good camera bag and one of the lovely soft ones coming but I thought it might be prudent to get a hard case for travel that would be safe in the overhead compartments as carry on luggage.. Does anyone here have a preference or think one brand is better than others? I have been looking and there is a nice Vanguard hard case that looks really sturdy but then there was another brand that looked like a really, hard, bright colored case.. A bit funky but not sure.. With the recent purchase of the canon 7d and I am keeping the 400d, I have a 4 lenses and a fewotherbits and pieces and want to keep it all safe as they are not minor purchases (for me anyway)... kja Posted April 27, 2012 Share Posted April 27, 2012 I don't use hard luggage for air travel anymore as the weight restrictions are too severe to sacrifice gear for the case. I always travel with my camera gear in a soft camera bag - or even in my purse if I am really testing the limits of carry-on regulations :D I've never had a problem at all and my carry-on rides in the upper compartment, not under the seat ahead of me coz I like my legroom. On long haul flights I might even take my camera bag down and use it as a foot rest. All fine. I use Canon and Lowepro bags if I'm taking a dedicated camera bag otherwise I simply use a roll-aboard bag and bubble wrap. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

huga Posted April 27, 2012 Share Posted April 27, 2012 I just shot a wedding in Ballarat, so flew to Melbourne with 2 cameras, 3 lenses, a flash and a tripod :D One camera, 3 lenses, the flash and all my batteries and CF cards were jammed into my Porteen bag and carried on. I am thinking about insuring it.. I know its not a huge purchase by some standards but it is to me and I plan on having it for a very long time... I will have to upload the pics and get some critique... I have even been looking at a few courses here in Canberra... There are some great one day news running in May. A one day one on portraits, lighting... I did a basic one when I got the 400d and really enjoyed it. Photography is an awesome out from my usual job of accounting and tax work...it makes a refreshing and relaxing change and helps me forget about work... It's good that you are getting so much out of it, I understand, I love it too :) I've never really had the chance to do courses etc, but I have had two very talented mentors. Just to get a handle on the basics and get a better understanding of it all. Hopefully I can get out of auto soon! I travelled with my D5100 in my porteen gear bag to Perth, first time under my seat and the return fight I was at an exit row so it had to go overhead. No issues. He is a local photographer and from memory they are around the $160 mark for a day... I am waiting (not so patiently now) for my porteen gear bag to arrive... I ordered and paid for it on the 18th April and I am going away on the 10th May, so I am hoping and praying it is here by then so I can use it.. huga Posted April 27, 2012 Share Posted April 27, 2012 KA - just switch it to manual, play for 10 minutes and you will get the hang of it, I promise. It will become second nature. Yes, but also incredible natural talent, otherwise they'd never have taken you under their wings. and I agree definitely insure your camera. Mine is on my household insurance.
