bigbadwolf
Hey guys I got a couple of question about the purchase of a puppy. Apologies if this have been posted before, a quick google did not show me anything about "fake pedigree" papers. Well I sought for a registered breeder from dogzonline and of course I picked one which seem to have produced quite a line of champions (sounds good eh?). Googled their champion dogs, family and all. Ok all good, gave the breeder a ring to ask if she has any or would be having any puppies soon and was told, "we do have puppies they are not 8 weeks yet but I don't have them you have to call mrs x". So the puppies are not with the breeder but someone else, I'm guessing perhaps the bitch belonged to someone else or whatever reason it may be. My concern is, who writes up these pedigree papers? My imagination runs wild into thinking they are breeding 2 random dogs and the pedigree papers writes up champion parents. More likely I'm being paranoid. Could someone enlighten me how pedigree papers are written out? Cheers guys.
minimax
What sort of pups are they? Usually there is nothing wrong with the pups being with someone else, I know someone who currently has pups at someone else's house due to circumstances that were unforseen by all involved! There are many reasons people have their pups at other houses other than their own, it doesn't mean they are dodgy. I don't know how pedigree papers are written, I'm sure someone who breeds can help you out there though. Good on you for doing your research though :)
Bjelkier
I have a similar situation here at the moment. I have a friends dog, I'll be having the litter with her but she dosn't belong to me. My friend is advertising the litter on her website too. It happens all the time and is perfectly ok. The pedigree papers are done up with the Canine Council of which ever state the bitch is registered in when she whelps. Rebanne
Pedigree papers are "written up" by the controlling body in each state. You may get the papers after you get the puppy due to some states requirements that pups have to be microchipped before they are registered. ie, I don't chip my pups until 8 weeks of age, then I send in th epaperwork which can take a few weeks to get back, in which time pup is already in new home. You can ring your states controlling body to see if the breeder is currently regsitered with them. But unless the paperwork for that litter has already been submitted they can't tell you if the litter is registered. So there has to be some amount of trust on your behalf. Likewise for the breeder to trust the things you are telling them. If you are feeling uneasy best to keep looking until you find a breeder you like and trust. Aziah
It is not uncommon for breeders to have some girls in homes with other people, often the dog is with a good friend etc and rather than disturb the peace by uprooting mother dog she is left with her owner who she has been living with to whelp and raise her litter and the babies are sold from there but registered under the prefix of the breeder who bred said mother. Whelping and raising a litter is such a big thing - often it's in the best interest of the bitch to remain with her usual owner :) Edited April 24, 2012 by Aziah

Whelping and raising a litter is such a big thing - often it's in the best interest of the bitch to remain with her usual owner :) Welcome to DOL. And as is also sometimes the case the owner may be too nervous to assist with the whelping should something go wrong so the bitch whelps with the original breeder but then when the pups are strong enough the owner feels confident to take the small family on for lots of loving care and early socialisation (and lots of fun puppy play of course) but the orginal breeder is the one whose Stud Prefix is being used as the owner of the bitch may not be a Registered Breeder but simply has an arrangement with the orginal breeder, who may in fact still be the registered owner of the dog, simply having placed her in a friends family to live. As you can see, lots of reasons why pups may not be with person handling the paperwork. That said, sadly some breeders have been lax with getting their paperwork back to new owners and I'm not really sure if there is any way of ensuring they do other than asking if they have in fact done the litte registration yet and how long they envisage it to take? As you can appreciate coming up with a bunch of names you like and deciding which pups will be on Main Registration (Showing Breeding) and which will be Limited Registration(Pets only) can take time. Missymoo
Some breeders find it convinant for pet people to home breeding girls and do all the hard work, then swoop in, take half the 'profits' and a pup too sometimes. This is somthing I totally disagree with... Other times things are for other reasons they cannot have the litter at their place, for ex moving, aggressive animal, illness of themselves or family member etc If things do not feel good to you find another breeder :)
Salukifan
What breed are you after? Do you have any intentions of showing your pup? If you do, you need to choose carefully and I'd be seeking recommendations.
Tralee
Well I sought for a registered breeder from dogzonline and of course I picked one which seem to have produced quite a line of champions (sounds good eh?). Cheers guys. First hit! Maybe. You don't seem to be sounding out the field though. What if they aren't sold on you as a potential home for their puppy? I would be vetting the breeders because they will be putting you through the third degree as well. I would also considering in much more depth whether the breed you have chosen is right for you. My suggestion is to short list a few lines of dogs, and then choose your breeder. Next, you need to pursuade them you are the best place for their puppy. Pedigree papers. Kudos to you, my friend. There's no drama involved, registration is tightly controlled and restricted. Good Luck Px
Esky the husky
Good luck, it may seem overwhelming, but the joy you get from you pup will make up for everything. Have you had a look at the breed sub forums, just up the top of where you posted this? Ask some questions of the people in there, there is a lot of collective knowledge. A few experienced people could be able to tell you more about the breeder, or suggest one that may be better suited :)
Staff'n'Toller
Which breed? Some of the dolers here may be able to steer you in the right direction/s. :)
bigbadwolf
wow didn't expect that many replies.. I feel more comfortable after hearing your replies, thanks for that! silly me for not mentioning I'm looking for a pembroke corgi. It was narrowed down from a couple of breeds. I did consider the jrt and beagle too but after reading up on each breed and watching countless YouTube videos on each of them, talking to friends and relatives who own them, I soon realised that the Pembroke was going to be a more ideal choice. One factor was my lifestyle suited a corgi more than the other breeds and partly I like what I am going to expect from a corgi. I rang up a few breeders and some sure asked many questions while others didn't, partly they aren't the breeders themselves just a friend helping with the welping and such. those that asked many questions were fairly impressed over the phone I would say, I work from home and it's like flexi hours. I have experience with dogs (family pet) and I'm quite the outdoor person. I love going for walks and a dog will give me more reason to continue walking lol. I don't believe in staying home and teaching a dog not to bark just because the dog is restless. But of course the rest is up to the breeders to believe, for all you know he/she thinks I'm lying just to get the puppy lol. Whether or not they believe I don't really bother cause I know the dog i get will be in good care, I treat dogs like human although the species are somewhat different. I'm really open to recommendations! That would really help me, I prefer breeders not too far away although I won't discount interstate if it's highly recommended. It is just that I would like to be able to take a drive up for my dog to meet his/her siblings or parents. They may be dogs but they have family too and I'll really hope I could do that, not just drop the cash and remove the puppy from the family forever. hope to hear more from you guys. mita
As a pet puppy buyer, the more careful a breeder is, in screening me for suitability, the more impressed I am with how this person regards his/her own dogs. The best companion dogs come from well-socialised parent dogs....and, so from breeders, who socialise their puppies, up close & personal, from birth. A breeder who continues this bond by wanting only the best home for puppies, is the one who goes to top of my list. I'd expect a person like that to screen carefully. The dog's future welfare, is the focus. When I went looking for our first dog from registered breeders, I phoned around and gave brief general information about me, our lifestyle & our history as pet owners. I gave the kind of information & documentation that I'd want if anyone were getting a precious puppy from me. I said I'd follow that up by sending this information in writing, with names & contacts for referees who'd be willing to vouch for me. It led to getting a gorgeous young purebred with a lovely temperament. After the little dog was delivered to me.....the breeder brought all the prizes she'd won, including Best Puppy in entire Royal Brisbane Show. I asked why she hadn't told me about prizes....& she said she knew I'd just loved the little one for what she was. (She was right!) What had impressed her was that we'd owned a little mixed breed dog, rescued after thrown from a car as a puppy, who lived until 22 yrs of age. Much loved, greatly cared for & sadly missed.
