ness
Has anybody had any experience with a dog who has a torn gracilis muscle.
shantiah
Yes. My greyhound tore both at the same time. Its also known as dropped back muscle
ness
Thanks - thats about as much as I can find out. I have heard its something more common in greyhounds but other than being told not to jump her for 10-14 days or so I don't really understand the logic to that. shantiah
You need to ice the injury initially and keep her on lead for 10-14 days to help healing. After that let her free run so the muscle doesnt tighten and massage (and ultrasound if you have access to one) will also help to break up any scar tissue. ness
Oh nothing like I was told at all. Hmmmm confused as anything. I am not sure how recent an injury it is. Its been something I have been monitoring and we were having some random hind end lameness on her right (however she has known issues with her left hind). shantiah
How bad is the tear? Is it partial or complete. Has it totally dropped and fallen from its initial position ? My girl did both legs at once which is apparently very very rare.
ness
I have no idea how bad - only that its torn. He got me to feel it. Its the latest in a bit of a constant injury saga for her unfortunately . Edited April 22, 2012 by ness
shantiah
Who is "he" ? Can you take your girl to a greyhound vet or muscle man ? They will have more idea than your normal vet. I work at a vet clinic and the vets are ok, but anything greyhound related I go to my local grey vet, muscle man or doggy chiro
ness
Oh sorry I should have clarified that "he" is the local chiro vet who has a background in greyhounds.
shantiah
Ok, guessing perhaps that it is an older injury or only a small tear rather than complete
ness
She has had some intermittent lameness however she came up completely not weight bearing on it over Easter to the point where I had to carry her home. However because she also has a luxating patella in her other knee its hard to work out what she is favouring for what reason and does leave me second guessing on occasion. She has been undergoing rehab for her shoulder and has only just started having her total exercise restrictions lifted. We have got to the point of gradually reintroducing more active stuff. So as to recent I am not sure how recent. Clear as mud probably and starting to confuse the hell out of me.
shantiah
I see your problem. Certainly not an easy one to work out . Still might be worth getting a second opinion if you have that option. I use a vet, a muscle checker, a muscle manipulator and a chiro depending on what the injury/problem is. Thankfully I have options but have gone through a couple of people before I have found the ones I am happy with
ness
Hmmm ok lets see with everything else so far she has had the involvement of 2 ortho specialists, a physio, our normal vet, my vet friend and the chiro vet (and a person who just does massage). ness
. I am sure they all go running when I send an email although in part they are much to polite about it .
shantiah
http://greyhoundtom.proboards.com/ might be helpful too. There are closed topics with info and also you can post a question. From memory Tom is a vet but regardless has lots and lots of knowledge. May take him a couple of days to respond though

Kimjm1
Very rare injury for any dog other than a greyhound
ness
Not sure that helps me any to know that. Pretty sure he knows what he is diagnosing. I am not even sure how she did it.
