RiverStar-Aura
I read in a thread about making a white dog's coat shiny that coconut oil could be beneficial. Before I give this a go with Kirah, I'd like to ask if it can cause a dog to gain weight. Since Kirah has stopped growing I'm struggling to find the right balance of her adult food and this morning I've cut her down to 1 table spoon of her Royal Canin diet twice daily. Hopefully that'll help get her weight down!! She's particularly hard to monitor as I'm not home from work until 7:30ish most nights so she's been fed by the family and goodness knows what they give her (even after I spell it out). I also don't know how many treats she's being given throughout the day. I'm asking about the coconut oil because I was of the belief that coconuts are quite fatty. Or is the oil different? Also, for a 6-7 kilo terrier what would be a sufficient amount for her? Thanks!!
Vehs
why not just give her a fish oil capsule or just give her a tin of sardines for dinner once a week?
sheena
With some dogs, coconut oil can cause them to lose weight as it stimulates their metabolism. It is the lowest calorie oil available. A fish oil capsule or tin of sardines once a week is not equivilent to daily Virgin coconut oil...(been there..done that). My 18 & 23 kilo BC's get roughly a tablespoon each daily so a dog your size would probably get a heaped teaspoon. I keep a good eye on my dogs' weight & they havn't changed since I have been giving them the CO.
RiverStar-Aura
Thanks for the info Sheena! I keep a close eye on my dogs' weight too -- that's why I'm trying so hard to get Kirah's right now. I've read that coconut oil solidifies at a low temp, do you feed your guys the oil as a solid or liquid? I'll be getting some coconut oil to try out on Tuesday. Hope if works!! sas
Yes, your dog could gain weight, it's a highly saturated fat....so depends how much you give. Strange thing is, it is also used as a weight loss miracle in people.....go figure!

Spoon a bit out of the tub, put in a thin tub and sit it in some warm water or you can just mash it in their meal, most dogs will just eat it as a chunk. I just spoon it straight out of the jar & sit it on top of their dinner....its' the first thing to get eaten. I don't bother measuring it out....I just guess. Sometimes for a change, they get a raw egg yolk (no white) instead, depending on how well the old girls are laying. Raw egg yolk is also very good for their coats. RiverStar-Aura
Well I've got a spare set of measuring spoons so I'm going to start Kirah off with 1/4 of a teaspoon twice daily as she has breakfast and dinner. And of course that means my darling boy Zeus will get some too!! :D
Erny
Mandela gets Coconut Oil daily too. Solid or liquid, doesn't matter. If, for some reason, I want it liquid, all I need to do is pour hot (I boil the kettle and make myself a cuppa at the same time) water in a small dish, tip the hot water out and spoon the coconut oil in, giving it a quick stir. The warmth from bowl is sufficient to melt the coconut oil. Doesn't even have to be boiling water that you warm the dish up with, but just makes melting quicker :). I eat it sometimes too, although I'm not as fond of it as Mandela is. Edited April 24, 2012 by Erny
RiverStar-Aura
Well the dogs had their first taste of coconut oil today and boy was I the most BESTEST MOMMA EVA!! I melted it in the microwave rather than put it in hot water and it seemed to work a treat. Now to watch for results!
sheena
No need to melt it...just put it on top of their food in a solid state.
Juddabug Whippets
I give my whippets (12kg) 1 tsp daily! I used to melt it but now it goes on top in a lump and it is the first bit to be gobbled down. We've had no weight gain in any of our 4 dogs since they've been on it.... Over 12mths now!
