My Nearly 16 Yr Old Has Just Undergone Surgery

This week my nearly 16yr old Tibetan Terrier had her tail removed as she had a cancer on it, and the vet wasn't sure if he could remove all of it, so was decided the tail had to go. Had an overnight stay at the vets. She also had dental work and lost some teeth, had bloods done and has been given a clean bill of health. She came through the surgery remarkably well for an oldie, though our vet knows we only use the "safest" anaesthetic. It is funny seeing a bobtail TT, but she is happy. Even though she is blind, and a little bit of dementia, she has good hearing and good sense of smell, so hopefully she will be around for a while yet. The girls at the surgery presented her with a Certificate of Bravery when she left which we will frame. Don't you just love the oldies.

Thanks everyone, she is a little trouper. Unfortunately her brother died of leukaemia just before his 7th birthday, so it's great to see his sister doing so well. They are the two black & white TTs in my siggy. Prue is the smaller one.

It's great that she's doing well. I have a 16-year-old and he's come through a couple of operations over the past few years really well. He has some dementia, too. You might want to take a look at Westemum's thread on doggie dementia for her Mac and my Grumpy.

Hi Sheridan, dementia in dogs is not new to me, as I had 3 of my dogs with dementia, one needed one on one help for everything , I spent a lot of time looking after him, until he got too bad and we had to make the decision to give him his wings, as with the other two. Prue is just a bit dottery, and I can relate to that.

Grumpy is mainly vague. He gets very confused if he thinks I've gone in one direction and can't find me.

Didn't suggest that you didn't know about dementia but it's a good thread just to discuss stuff.

I agree, as there is just so much to caring for oldies, that a lot of people don't realise.
