Guest LittleMissOdie Posted April 7, 2012 Share Posted April 7, 2012 Hi everyone, first of all thanks to everyone who helped me out in my last post, I noticed another tiny problem today that I forgot to mention. Our 11 week old puppy Odie is almost fully housebroken, she's learning to hold it in her crate overnight (minus a couple of accidents but they're very rare). She usually cries and lets us know when she needs to be let out, or if the door to our yard is open she goes straight out to do her business. Up until now we have had very few accidents and none over the last few weeks. However, we recently stayed at my MIL place for a week to dogsit, and we brought our puppy up with us (we also stayed there to get her socialized with other dogs). MIL has 2 terrier type dogs, both around 7 years old. I noticed when we were there our puppy peed in the male terrier's bed (marking it?) and, perhaps in retaliation, the terrier peed in Odie's bed in return! I washed both beds thoroughly and returned them, but after this I noticed that Odie would keep peeing in her bed. I washed it several times and the same thing happened, which I found quite strange as she would have no problems sleeping in the bed afterward - on the other hand, if she soils her crate during the night, she cries and won't sleep until her towel and puppy pad are clean and replaced. Thinking that it must be a problem with a lingering scent on her dog bed, I went out today and bought her another one - only to find that she peed in it again within 5 minutes of putting it down! Can anyone shed some light as to how to possibly fix this? Red Fox Posted April 7, 2012 Share Posted April 7, 2012 Is the bed on a hard (non absorbent surface?) She could well be using it as one giant pee pad. Take it away completely and give her a towel to lay on for a week or two instead (in the meantime give it a good wash with BioZet and air it out). Can anyone shed some light as to how to possibly fix this? Please note that other than this, she's been a dream when it has come to housebreaking - she got the hang of it really quickly. I'd take a guess that this (above bolded) is your problem. She's been so good and learnt so quickly that it's easy to forget she's just a baby. Drop your guard and they regress pretty quickly! Lose the bed for a bit, up the consistency in your house training (take a step back if you need to) and you'll probably find you can break the habit before it becomes a major issue. Stitch Posted April 11, 2012 Share Posted April 11, 2012 Don't know the exact physcology of this behaviour but it is only a problem for us humans and doesn't seem to be a problem for the dogs concerned....and it varys between breeds and/or the size of the dog from my experience.....small/medium sized dogs being most common. For my breed the older the dog gets, the more the problem sorts itself out but the majority of mine start off the same. Providing bedding material brings out the need to wee on it....so taking away the bedding material and substituting newspaper often produces the desired result of a dry crate. Of course withholding water from about 5pm also helps. What can I say....don't use the bedding unless you can live with washing it daily. In the cold weather I use polar fleece blankets as they dry very quickly. They eventually grow out of this habit....the less bedding you use the quicker they are dry overnight. They get used to/conditioned to not peeing so they stay dry because by then they are old enough to remember. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
pesh Posted April 15, 2012 Share Posted April 15, 2012 If it's not an infection, grab a spray bottle of 'urine off' from your pet store or vets. Removes the traces of past urine. hilaryo Posted April 21, 2012 Share Posted April 21, 2012 Napisan - buy the one for nappies. I use it regularly to get rid of doggie odours and if we've had had any puppies peeing on bedding. Make sure it's the correct strength versus water and rinse particularly well. If something won't fit in the laundry tub, I soak overnight in the bath, or if you have a top loader, in the washing machine. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
