Perry's Mum
A friend's elderly mother is paying $120+ for a consultation with the cost of tests and meds extra. This is a lot higher than I pay in Canberra. Is she being ripped off or are these standard rates? If it is expensive, can anyone recommend a vet within easy reach of Indooropilly? Kitt
Hi, I'm in Brisbane and this week at the vet I paid approx. $130, but that was for a consultation and medication. I think a consultation is usually between $60 and $80. But I'm sorry I don't know of any vets in that area.
melinda10786
I think it depends on what test it is, medication, length of time of visit. My last vet visit was $120 but that included ear drops. If its just a normal consult (so in and out), I get charged around $60 per visit.
minxy
That sounds very exxy to me. The different specialists I go to for Kyojin's knees only charge me about $70 a consult.
erinonthefarm
That makes me feel better, I thought it was expensive in Alice Springs @ $60 or there abouts.
Guest donatella
That is crazy talk! I go to a wealthy area vet in Bulimba and my consults are only $50-60, she's getting ripped off, poor darlin! I can't recommend any near indro unfortunately but she can def get cheaper

Jumabaar
Here in a clinic I payed about that for conjunctivitis by the time I payed for the consult, testing and medication- I didn't go back to them but that wasn't because the price was excessive it was because I thought the service was crap!! I would happily pay that for a vet that had excellent service and was really thorough..... It really depends what the tests and medications were because they can add up really thickly. ETA- consults are generally between 60-80 without any testing or medication. Edited April 4, 2012 by Jumabaar
HazyWal
WOW I took Maddie to my vet today to look at something I was worried about ( turned out to be nothing....again ) and cost me $47 standard consultation.
Guest lavendergirl
That seems very expensive - I pay around $50 for a consultation. If the lady is around Indooroopilly she could enquire at the UQ vet clinic perhaps.
SeeGee
I'd suggest the vet at the Uni @ St Lucia.

The $120+ was just the consulting fee - she paid extra for tests and medication. Edited April 4, 2012 by Perry's Mum
Guest lavendergirl
It would appear that the poor lady was taken advantage of unless there were other costs involved. Is your friend able to contact the vet clinic on her mother's behalf and seek a clarification of the bill? Prices that vets charge do tend to be a bit higher in that inner west area, so she hopefully she can travel out to Middle Park, which is about ten or fifteen minutes away by car. mita
If only it weren't a few suburbs away.....I have an excellent vet at The Gap. Consultation is around $45. Many times I've thought she's made a mistake with the bill, because it's been so reasonable. But I go to her because she's so good and communicates so well. The reasonable charges are just icing on the cake. All our neighbours now go to her, too, even tho' we have to drive into the next suburb. Someone I know got an enormous quote for desexing a small dog, in that Indooroopilly area. She came over to my vet for nearly 1/2 that amount. And the vet even did some fixing of a tooth she noticed while the dog was 'under'....& didn't charge for it. Edited April 4, 2012 by mita
bianca.a
I used a vet in Yeronga (Fairfield) which is the next suburb over and from memory they charged $50ish for a consult ( nearly 3 years ago though). Poor lady that makes me sad that is sounds like she was taken advantage of
jrm88
No vet would charge a normal consultation at $120! It would either have been: after hrs, a specialised consult, or an extended consult (but still pushing it!) There has probably been some miscommunication about what she has actually paid for, but I have never heard of a vet charging $120 for a normal, 15ish minute consult at a normal (gp) veterinary clinic. Flick_Mac
Off the top of my head UQ charge $50ish for a consult and you get twice as much attention because you get to see one of my classmates first then the vet :)
Niques
Wow, that's a lot. I can't find any of my receipts from last year, but at the end of 2010 a simple consult was only ~$50. In Brookfield.
**Super_Dogs**
I am pretty sure I pay around $60. I know the emergency vet charges $115 for after hours. If I need medication the visit usualyl costs $120-150. I think it is time for them to change vets!
