Sorry to hear Ness.

MG - no, no xrays. going on advice that xrays won't show up the alleged problem, only CT/MRI. Very $ . But am starting to rethink things.

At agility i rewarded rosie with a ball retrieve and she came up on 3 legs - hind leg this time. Same leg she injured a couple months ago when she overcorrected on a ball retrieve and rolled and came up on 3 legs.

Sigh. Then i had my nephews around last night and before i could stop him, my nephew pushed Rosie off the wall (he is gentle with her but is on the autism spectrum and had ealier been dropping toys off to see them fall.. sigh... was not with ill intent.) . She is now sore on both her front and her hind.

I am really sad to say that although i was hoping to trial her, i may be retiring from agility.

Plus am putting in effort to re train her to NOT jump off the wall.. which she only does if a toy goes over or i walk near the hose... or if somthing stimulating is going on. Otherwise she goes down steps or slope.

MG - can you get into rivergum with no referral?

I will leave things to settle down and see how she goes. It all seems to have got worse since the daily hill worked stopped after she hurt her hind leg. I had started it up again, but not on a daily basis.

:-(

SO frustrating.

Sorry to hear she is not going too well ness - is there a canine physio near you who could take a look - Issy was over the hill work very fast, the physio gave use some figure of eight exercises, stretches and other things to mix it up with. She also said it is common for them to get stiff and sore from tensing other muscles to avoid pain/any instability. She taught us to massage her legs and back to "loosen" and relax other muscles, which seemed to really help but it was quite specific areas and muscles we had to work on and I would have been too scared to try without expert direction in case it did more harm. :( I hope things improve soon for you.

Yep we have a physio who is looking after her to :o. Emailed her and she said just drop it back a notch for a fortnight :(. We have been doing figure 8s around traffic cones already prior to this week.

This is what Issy did after I accidently left the lounge blind down after her first crate rest, she was bored senseless despite all our attempts at crate games and puzzles. I guess her loss of the view was the final straw. I am so thankful she is through this round of surgery and am crossing fingers we get a long break before the next one.

I'm not really sure Rosie but you could phone and ask. You could just get your vet to write you a letter for a consult because they are very good. Was also told I needed a MRI initially but Rivergum said X-rays are fine and they could even see the changes o n the first lot of xrays that 2 other vets missed. We see Tom Hill. Apparently Neil Gibson is great too, we are seeing him next thurs for suture removal.

Oh no Ness, what was the basis for the suggestion? Would the third specialist be looking for something else or is it more a second opinion to confirm what is going on - not sure what I would do in this situation. I guess we were lucky if it can be considered lucky to have a dog with a shocking back end,all of her problems were very obvious sadly. I guess if you don't have an absolutely clear answer it would worth a try,the one thing we found was that all the specialists had slightly different approaches to post op treatment and rehab - we just had to fiddle around with the combinations until we found what worked. Issy stayed on her pain medication for a lot longer than initially suggested as we felt building up the muscles was crucial-they had wasted so much and she was averse to doing anything if she had pain (who wouldn't be?) . We did this in close consultation with the vet & surgeon and it meant monitoring her very carefully and adjusting her feed times for her meds. It must be so frustrating, good luck if you decide to see the specialist, keep us posted.

Physio is not totally inclined to think surgery on the patella might fix the remaining shoulder issue. I actually emailed another specialist re her shoulder mid way through last year before taking her to see this other specialist :o. I knew of the other specialist as she use to bring dogs to the local dog park over many years. The physio has close dealings with the first specialist I took Kenz to and the one that did the xrays and ultrasound but I just didn't get a brilliant feeling out of her. She wasn't definite in any sort of diagnosis and seemed to be unprepared to answer questions. I also didn't get a brilliant feeling about the clinic. Its also a general emergency clinic and the reception staff seemed to have no idea and things seemed mega disorganised.

The one who has done the PRP treatment on her shoulder has been good. Emails don't go unanswered - the longest I had to wait on a response was actually this past week and when he did finally respond he was apologetic for not having responded earlier.

At any rate I have emailed the specialist and asked more questions he will respond and I'll go from there. I basically asked if the shoulder might continue to persist until the patella is sorted out.

Physio just thinks it might be worth doing further diagnostics to make sure there is nothing more going on in the spine or hips. Kenz only ever had xrays of the front half of her the first time around. I am not sure it necessarily needs the input of a third specialist and it might just be the case of getting specialist number 2 to do more diagnostic workup before we decide about surgery.

Need a money tree I think.

We went out for a walk this morning - 35 min romp in the park off-lead hmmm you wouldn't pick a hind end problem looking at her moving this morning. Her gait was effortless without a hint of what lays underneath. I still wonder if I can somehow get the muscle back if it might become less of a problem just not sure how long that may take.

I know the feeling re the money tree, we have been told Issy will most likely need a revision of her knee surgery as the femoral head ostectomy has completely changed the alignment in her leg - she will most likely also need the other hip doing so we are crossing fingers her knee on that side stays sound until after any hip surgery on that side. It's not just the surgery for me, I worry about her being in pain a lot of her young life but am reassured by the surgeon she will get a good outcome and have a pain free life once it is over, so we are keeping going and hanging in there. (Also praying for a lottery win so I can build a treadmill here)

Grrrr this is starting to drive me up the wall - chirovet has said she needs 3 good legs so pending the specialist his advice would be surgery at this stage. Vet friend had a good feel over the patella today and said yeah its there but she doesn't think its significant enough to warrant surgery or is enough of an explanation as to why she is coming up 3 legged lame and then not putting weight on it for hours at a time.

 Ness they seem to be sending you round in circles! Do the various specialists confer with each other? Have you decided about getting the third opinion? I really hope you get an answer soon - not surprised it is driving you up the wall.

Hmm the second specialist talks to chiro vet. The first specialist talks to physio and vet friend - hence why we started at specialist one.

Honestly at this point we are trying to work out what is causing her the greatest bother - if its the shoulder then the option is ultrasound/MRI/further rehab, if the answer is the patella then its surgery.

Unfortunately for me we were out in the yard today and she came up not weight bearing on her left hind again so starting to think the answer is the patella :(. I have emailed the second specialist with a list of questions. I really worry how we will both cope with another 4 months of pretty strict rest though. :(.
