What type of dog are you looking for TunaGirl and do you already have a dog/ other pets ?

We aren't looking for anything specific just wanting to give an opportunity for a larger/older dog to be rehomed.

We're looking more for a girl as we already have two boys (a grey and a pom).

I'm going to give them a call today and see if I can catch them!

I went through a similar thing when I was looking to get a rescue pug. They ignored me so often I ended up buying a puppy.

Are there other rescue organisations you can try? Ones like might be a little more interested in actually finding good homes for dogs?

Hopefully I wasn't one that 'ignored' you. I made it a point to contact people although I did receive several text messages over the years with messages such as 'I would like to adopt a pug, do you have any?' or 'I am looking for a rescue pug can you call me'. Neither would likely get a response if it was by text.

LOL! I've been getting some strange texts since PetRescue started sharing profiles on Trading Post. My favourite:

Some person texts around 10pm (!!): "I want to buy the kitty you have on Trading Post"

Me: "Which one are you asking about? We have more than 20 available for adoption."

Person: "Just send photos of all of them and I'll pick one"

Me: ........

I can recall getting a call at 6.50am on a Sunday from a woman up the coast. At the time, I was on an overnight reprieve from the rescue (well Monte actually) and I had a rare chance to sleep past 5am.

The conversation started very blearily and ended a short time later with her sobbing and telling me how her much loved dog had died the year before. It seems she was still in heavy mourning and just wanted someone to talk to. I don't mind that part but I certainly wasn't excited about being woken so early on a rare day off!

:( Finally spoke to someone there, they said they had called but left no message. The dog I wanted was on trial, and although we had a lovely long chat, left me feeling like our entire lifestyle was under judgement. I realise that screening is important and applies to everyone not just everyone 'else' but yeah, feeling put off right now to be honest.

Lola I tried to message you, is your inbox full? You can send me your number instead if you like and I will give you a buzz.

This was my experience too. I understand that they want to find a great home for the dog, but the feeling of being scrutinised and judged is quite unpleasant, especially if you are private kind of person. I ended up getting a cross breed pup from an "oops" litter who needed a home and would otherwise have gone to a petshop, even though my first preference was for an adult dog as I was just so over it by the 8th or 9th dog. Hope you have better luck going through DOL'ers :)

Yes I ended up going to a shelter after some  episodes with rescue organisations. I arranged to view a dog I thought might suit but just didn't feel I could make a connection with. I made a donation to the group but was still treated rather narkily because I didn't take the dog - surely it should be expected that not everyone who views a dog will think that dog is for them. I do think the rescue groups in general though are wonderful in the work that they do - so very difficult.

When we have people coming to look at a particular dog, we also have a few others lined up ready for viewing also - based on the potential adopter's initial phone conversation. If the original dog doesn't suit, at least they can view other options in case one does click with them. It's amazing how many people will come to look at one dog, but eventually decide that a dog of a different breed or size works better for them. Even if they leave without a dog, at least they are happy that we spent the time to try to match them with a dog that would fit into their lifestyle - and we don't try to force dogs on anyone - that only leads to unsuitable matches.

One problem that rears it's ugly head regularly in rescue is that while most people in rescue are great with animals, they sometimes lack people skills...

Sad to think that rescue's have a difficult to deal with image but being on the other side maybe I can give some insight into what we have to deal with:

I currently have 12 week old Amstaff pups that were orphaned and hand raised. All have lots of pink skin on face and ears ( sunburn easily)

Of over 20 applications and numerous house checks etc I have only rehomed 1.

Reasons for decline:

1. No fences ( but our other dog never ran away!)

2. Outside dog ( Yard did not have a blade of grass or tree for shelter. No kennel or shade areas. )

3. Second Dog ( Hubby did not show any interest in wife getting a new dog. The comment was 'whatever'..)

4. Price ( could you drop the price to say $200.. only a pensioner.. vet work alone has been over $300 let alone the feeds for an orphan)

The list of knockback reasons was huge.. I do however let people know why they are knocked back.. Even if they dont want to hear it.. Most of the applications would have been ok for an older less sun prone dog..

Oh and the one that did rehome is all white & lives both inside and out with owners who were besotted with him right from the start.

See, that's the thing - I would have thought we offered a reasonable home. Sure both my partner and I work full time, but when we are home the dogs live with us. They are our furkids.

The thing that really stuck with me was the passing judgement feeling, asking questions I am fine with but the answers were being met with an attitude of 'well that is adequate BUT'. For example both our dogs are well adjusted and friendly boys and quite sedentary, happy to greet people, kids and visiting dogs. They have the run of 2 acres to themselves 24/7 and come with me when I feed the horses. Yet I was told, not asked, why I wasn't walking them and they need to be walked to be socialised.

Then there was stuff like our grey not being desexed yet, again I was expecting that question, which was because it was on the list, but we had vet bills to clear first from a spate of horse vet calls. Again told I needed to desex him or he would get cancer. Then she wondered aloud what we would do for vet bills for an older dog? I pointed out we'd spent $4000 on our pom for a broken leg, our grey had pannus and was treated 3x a day and had doggles for his outside trips in the sun, I had a horse with insulin resistance and another showing signs of cushings. Then it was onto being told our grey would wander (he doesn't) and so on you get the idea.

It's just... I don't know! I just was told my hay isn't being delivered today and we are out, so I have to get my irresponsible self over to the neighbours to borrow some hay... lol. sorry it's coming out like a whingefest but it's how I feel about it right now.

Sounds like you have a perfect home Tunagirl..

Anyone that racks up huge vet bills is obviously caring for their animals. :D

Would you like to adopt an Amstaff puppy??

I'm not sure what we are doing now, my boyfriend knows I had my heart set on this particular dog - I have to talk to him about it and see where we go to from here. I am still keen to rehome another dog but it will be up to what he wants as well.

Here's a snap of the men of the house :)

How annoying. I sent a letter to a well know greyhound rehoming service - nothing back. I couldn't be bothered trying again so will just keep an eye on the RSPCA.

Just remember e-mail isn't always reliable, e-mails can get lost in cyber space, servers go down. If you don't hear back, call :)

Sorry guys, but you are going to get screened if you go through rescue (well one would hope so) - our Dane Rescue screening is quite indepth and personal but it's neccessary.....i.e. if you don't have the means to pay (beg, borrow or steal [well not steal]) for an emergency Bloat/Tortion situation then a Dane isn't going to be a dog that is going to be suitable.

Although, I'm not rude to people or judgemental but there is a list of screening questions that we need to go through.
