aussielover Posted March 17, 2012 Share Posted March 17, 2012 Why do people always think that an adult dog won't hurt a puppy? Because they shouldn't. It is totally unacceptable behaviour and a sign of a very bad temperament. Lots of adults will put a puppy in it's place by holding it down by the throat with a lot of noise if the puppy is being obnoxious but any adult that launches an unprovoked attack on a puppy that does damage is totally in the wrong. I have seen it happen at shows and just hope these dogs are never bred from. Agree 100% Maybe it's a little naive, but I think a dog should never attack a puppy. Agree, but it is unrealistic to expect all dogs to be "normal". There is quite a large risk taking such a young/small puppy to a dog park. Firstly because puppies can get excited and ignore their owners and run over to other dogs- never a good idea to allow your dog to do that to a strange dog, they can trigger prey drive and excitement in some dogs, especially if they start squealing, they may be inadvertently injured by rough play. I don';t let my medium size dog play with small dogs or young puppies unless she is lying down. I would certainly never let her play chase games with them. I think a component of DA is genetic. I use to drive past one every day and cringe when I would see Mum with the pram and the toddler in the middle of the dog park... what the hell are people thinking..... Its what gives animals (and people) their individual identities. I have a 13 year old dog here that I got as a 1 week old with her siblings and her mother. Her mother was a GREAT natured dog. My pup was just born on the wrong side of the bed. She has had plenty of controlled socialisation, blah blah blah. I wanted her to be my agility dog (and she was for quite a few years) and she was good at it too. My perfect dog - fast, bold, smart, keen, responsive EXCEPT she doesn't like others. She didn't have any bad experiences to make her like that - its just the way she is wired. She would run agility for others, take treats from others, then when treats are gone, she will then bite if you touch her. She is just very alpha and no animal or person will take that from her as far as she is concerned. If she is at the door, there will be no-one allowed between her and the door. Whether is a person, dog, cat, chicken. She will posture and body block and sometimes snap at whatever is causing problems. She is now 1 of 7 dogs here. She has bitten every dog that lives here (more than once) usually drawing blood, if they get in her way. If I am not home, she will not let people on the back verandah, near the cars or stables or anything. They are allowed to the front door (if they are game to walk close enough). SHe doesn't lunge or attack, she just blacks access and barks and grumbles. She will only bite if she is touched. So I will guarantee there is no such thing as free passage for pups. And nor should there be, pups have to learn too. I am not saying that attacking a puppy is allowed but it is the puppy owners responsibility to keep puppy safe and so should not be allowing it to run up to strange dogs. Squidgy Posted June 8, 2012 Share Posted June 8, 2012 If my dog is 3 months old had its shots and comes when called, then I certainly would have it offlead at an offlead park ( fully supervising of course!!) In this situation is the other persons dog and the owner of it to blame, people should be able to bring their dogs to an off lead park to socialise without the fear of its heading getting torn off by some uncontrollable idiot. :mad Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
