BC Crazy
Hi everyone, This subject has probably been done to death but couldn't find any answer's so am going to give it a go. Stella urine is making a burnt patches all over our new lawn that OH has just laid & he is understandably not a happy chappy. Have been using Dog Rock's in my dogs water for a while now but still having a big problem. Is there anything else I can do? Is it something in her diet that makes this occur? Hope it is not burning her I do water it into the lawn when I can. Just wondering if there is something I can do to rectify this problem before we end up back to a dust bowl again. Thanks in advance guys for any ideas/remedies to stop this from continuing. :) Edited March 14, 2012 by BC Crazy
Boronia
Dog Rocks. They work! You must buy the genuine Dog Rocks...the others don't work as long. You can buy them here--> http://www.vetnpetdirect.com.au/ROCK or at other pet stores
BC Crazy
Hi Boronia, Yes I am using genuine Dog Rocks from the link you provided actually. I really can't figure why they aren't working here. Cause I have heard such glowing reports about them.
Tralee
Try some apple cider vinegar in the dogs water.
Sandra777
To me your options are: Train her to pee in only one place Water (liberally!) immediately after she has peed Live with it
Erny
I agree with Sandra777. Not that I'm an expert on what the dog's system is or does, but I'm not a fan of altering something that ain't broke. IE - the acidity balance of the dog's urine. Unless, of course, you need to do so for the sake of the dog's health. Just my opinion :). ETA: When I was a kid, we never saw any burn marks in our lawns from our dogs. Perhaps it was because we never fed our dogs commercial food. Or perhaps it was because they went and pee'd on someone else's lawn. Edited March 14, 2012 by Erny
Austerra
Dog Rocks do work when done correctly, I've found that when people don't get good results they are changing the water too often and hence losing the minerals from the Dog Rocks. Make sure you are using the right ratio of Rocks to water, only top up the water, if you really need to wash out the bowl tip the water and Rocks into another container, wash the bowl then replace the Rocks and water and top up if need be. Hope that makes sense :D
Mason_Gibbs
My 2 eat raw and their pee still kills the lawn! The older one is on meds or allergies so I understand why his urine may be burning grass but the pup is on no meds
WreckitWhippet
A splash of ACV in every water bowl.

Or maybe we should just tell anybody looking to buy it that our lawn is a new variety of Buffalo, Leopard Buffalo maybe  Edited March 14, 2012 by BC Crazy
ellz
Apple Cider Vinegar really does work. It is also good for other things....cleaning, arthritis, UTI's etc. Also, my Lowchen arrived with very stained facial furnishings around his mouth and eyes (this is caused by bacteria). After a couple of months on drinking water with ACV added, his face is barely stained and his tearstaining is minimal.
sheena
My daughters Maltese has a lot of facial staining. How much ACV would you add to say, a litre of water. I assume you would use the best one from a health food shop, not the cheapies you find in supermarkets. Does it take long to start having an effect? If she were to bath his face in ACV/water, would that help remove the staining....he is very old. I am probably moving off the thread a bit here...sorry BC. Maybe I should start a new thread :)

Maybe I should start a new thread :) Tell her to have his teeth checked. Facial staining is due to a build up of bacteria in the wet area under the eyes - often due to a depressed immune system and frequently that's due to teeth issues. ETA: No way would I be putting vinegar (diluted or not) anywhere near a dog eyes. Edited March 15, 2012 by Telida Whippets

Maybe I should start a new thread :) No, bathing in ACV wouldn't do a great deal at all. ACV works from the inside out by changing PH levels of the saliva and tears which is where bacteria accumulate to cause the staining. In an old dog, I'd be looking more at physical causes, as mentioned teeth but also eyes and ears before relying upon ACV. The best ACV to use is a pure ACV, I use the bulk ones from farm produce stores generally but if I cannot get that then my second choice is any that is ONLY apples. Many people don't read labels and aren't aware that many vinegars contain caramel flavouring, other additives and preservatives which effectively undo any good effects. My "scientific" amount is a good slosh per bucket but in most cases you will need to work up gradually because many animals won't drink water if anything has been added to it...best to start small and work up to as strong as you can get it before they turn their noses up and start queueing up at the toilet door so that they can drink out of the "pure" ceramic water bowl!
BC Crazy
I have been adding 1 teaspoon of ACV to their food as I am using Dog Rocks in their water & didn't want them 'not to work' I brought it from the health food shop. I am all out of ideas hence the thread. I have as of today started to put the sprinkler system on for 10 mins in the morning in an effort to wash some of urine away so it is not left on the lawn during the day to burn it. Would really matter really usually but we do intend to sell our house so want it at it's best. Thanks for everyone's help thus far. :)

Maybe this is where I am making a mistake. Will try your suggestion Much appreciated. :)

Thanks for everyone's help thus far. :) You will probably find, that where you had yellow spots before, you will soon have bright green spots  My daughter has had her little old man checked out by the vet & his teeth are pretty good. He is almost blind & has cataracts over both eyes & is almost deaf. But apart from that, he is happy & still gets a little spring in his step sometimes. The staining is coming from his eyes. He would not survive a GA, so she is trying to make his life as comfortable as possible till that big sad day comes
BC Crazy
Oh that is sad but while he has spring in his step even occasionally he is still got to feeling good some of the time even. It is not his time yet then. Sounds like he is in very good/kind hands Sheena.
