Caterpillar Swarm On The Move

Look what greeted us this morning at the rescue I volunteer at...

WARNING!! If you are squeamish, please don't look...

... and if that wasn't scary enough... I took pics too!

Apparently they are Steel Blue Sawfly larvae looking for somewhere to burrow and pupate... truly bizarre critters... about 10cm long each!

I was thinking of sending some of the photos to the various info websites out there - all their photos are boring... lol!

We actually had 2 clusters of them... that was the smaller cluster but the easiest to photograph. I eventually scooped up the other cluster with a shovel and merged the 2 groups... it was a mega swarm then, and they all moved in unison... truly bizarre!

Good idea, I'm sure they would appreciate the quality pics. Close-ups are fantastic.
