Titre Testing Coverage

Recommended Posts

3 years ago I had my dogs titre levels tested by Vetpath in WA and the paperwork that I got back stated they were immune for 12 months. After consultation with Jean Dodds I was happy enough to leave them for the 3 years with the levels they received (>1:80 for both distemper and parvo). It is now time to look at getting Whip tested and was going to get all 3 of mine done at the same time.

I know if I send the samples to Dr Dodds she will put 3 years on the paperwork, do any of the Australian companies do this as well? Or does it still require a 12month retesting. With 9 dogs in the household that is pretty expensive and almost makes it worth just vaccinating As they are performance dogs they require that paperwork to compete.

Has anyone sent samples to Dr Dodds in the past? How expensive is it? From memory someone I knew worked out it was cheaper to send to her about 5 years ago for thyroid testing but things will have changed since then I am assuming.

DC - the international courier (FedEx) fee is about $70 AUD. Have you googled Dr Jean to see if she has her fee for titre testing up on her site? Just add that as the Aussie dollar is about the same as the US dollar, although we're beating that by a tad, just at the moment.

Oh - and of course you need to add your own Vet's fee for drawing the bloods.

ETA: Just been to Dr Jean's site. Titre test for Parvo and Distemper - $45.00 USD.

Does anyone know why they wouldn't include Hepatitis titre test?

I think because hepatitis hasn't been seen by any vets in Aus for 20 years or so, I know you can send to the UK for testing if you want it done though.

Hmm, would all 3 samples be included in that $70? Would work out cheaper over 3 years that is for sure, as opposed to getting them tested every year in Aus.

Oh thats cheap if you send over a few!! Might think about it, although it depends on the vet being nice enough to do a multi dog consult for a decent price.

They have shown that if you test positive to one of the other two (can't remember which) then you are covered for Hepatitis so it isn't necessary to test it individually.

Delta - the $70 is for the FedEx Courier. Well, I should clarify that's the fee I paid about 12 months ago from Melbourne to California. I guess there'd be a variation depending on the exact origin and destination of the parcel.

$45 USDollar is Dr Jean Dodds' fee for the Parvo and Distemper Titre. At the moment it would probably prove to be a couple of dollars less than that in Aussie Dollar equivalent.

Add about $60 for your Vet's consult. The total would come to about $175.00.

If you could line up a number of people's dogs and send under the one FedEx Courier, the cost would be reduced.

I know when I was living in Sydney they were trying to organise a mass titre testing day with a local vet, and the whole lot were being sent to Dr Dodds in one hit. Was going to work out very cheap but it never eventuated.

Wonder if anyone in Canberra would now be interested... I'm seeing my vet this arvo to chiro a few of the dogs so might see if she is interested.

Checked with Ultimate Vet Clinic (Dr Bob Cavey) in Narre Warren South. Informed by Dr Christina there that they will run titre tests which will incorporate testing for Parvo, Distemper and Hepatitis. Two of the tests get sent to labs in WA. The other one to the UK. Total cost is $188.10. Doesn't sound a bad price to me :).

Erny - Do you know what it would be for just parvo and distemper? That's a pretty good price regardless seeing as I've been quoted $400 by one vet!

Hopefully if I remember I will call them tomorrow, I am assuming they will only cover them for one year?

Good questions, both of which I didn't think to ask at the time (Doh!! ). If you ring them and find out, will you post here please? I might have bugged them too much as it is. Their quote initially was much higher but they did some work/research and found another laboratory and were able to create a considerable saving. I think good on 'em for making the effort :).

I paid $70 forr my title testing

Thats about what I currently pay.

We need to compare apples with apples, though. Is $70.00 for a titre on all three diseases? IE Parvo, Distemper and Hepatitis?

I think IDEXX is an expensive option here in Australia which does mean that the price varies a fair bit depending on where the clinic sends to bloods too.

My vet normally uses Gribbles and I was quoted $300 plus but thanks to SecretKai mentioning that Vetpath was cheaper, he opened an account there! How's that for great service! So I was charged $97.70 for parvo/distemper.

That price included $29.50 for blood sampling fee.

Perhaps see if your vet is approachable to doing the same?
