Grooming A Longcoat Gsd

Yep that's the exact part I thought was untidy and needed trimming :-)

I show long coat White Swiss, and we do not trim at all. Part of being a long coat is their furnishings, so they stay. :)

The only thing I would scissor is excessive hair on the bottoms of their feet.

Agreed I would only scissor the coat under the pad.

Having owned a LC GSD for a few years now - i recommend a metal comb (poodle comb), a slicker brush, and a long pin cushion brush.

ive only ever used scissors to line up the hair on the hock from looking uneven (but with removing the all the hair) and under the paws around the pad without removing the furnishings above.

My girl will go in the ring later this year (first i need her signed over by specialist judges)

Brush the neck against the grain towards the head and get the dog to shake before going in the ring so the hair sits back in a down motion but without losing the bodiness of the coat, and the chest brushed up and forward. i like to give a 'mane' look to my girl because i like her looking fluffy. :)

the back hair i have laying down and the pants i like to fluff a little.

The above is IMO - i suppose there is no wrong grooming yet - as the breed has only been officially signed over in Germany and in Oz this year.

I'd trim the feet/hocks too and just grooms as usual the rest of the dog. If you have Rogue ear hairs then you may need to pluck those but apart from that you should find it pretty easy...

Pockets if they are still pups they won't have their adult coats yet so your grooming will evolve along with them. :)
