God knows they'll pay their taxes to support yours anyway.

Trouble-maker  It's us "breeders" who will be financing your retirement! Selflessly keeping our economy running with fresh grist for the mill.

I'm funding my own retirement Aidan... the taxes paid in the future by today's kiddies won't be contributing a cent. :)

Although I think I pay enough tax annually to support a few kids. I don't begrudge it either. AND I'll be creating jobs for them ... they'll be wiping my drool etc in the crumblies home. :provoke:

Seriously who gives a toss if people have kids or not provided they are happy with their choices. I DO feel for those who so want children but can't have them.. its a cruel blow. :(

I've never understood why some parents feel they have a right to feed their kids before they pay for the goods! :mad

Have you ever tried to shop with a 2-3 yr old?? Its the worst thing ever and if I have to give my son something to eat to shut him up in the supermarket ,I will. I am after all paying for it!! Seriously some people ought to mind there own business. I'm sure all the child haters would prefer my toddler to be happily munching on something than screaming the place down. Sheeze, you just can't win. AND don't ask me to bring food from home as the supermarket workers think you may have stolen it . AND don't ask me to feed my child before or after I shop, they are not machines that are programed to eat when you want them too, as much as I would love that!. I would of course prefer not to have a hungry kid with me at all when I shop ( just to keep you happy) but thats impossible. SORRY !!!

Geez no need to blow a gasket. If you had been following the thread you would have noticed that Liz is not a child hater and has some of her own. Perhaps she can explain how she manages it.

I think the bigger problem is the people who don't pay for things they eat.

When OH worked at Woolies they used to have to throw out a lot of yoghurt because kids used to come along and break the lids on them.

Hmmm...yes, I wouldn't have been able to feed the family if I hadn't taken my kids to the supermarket with me.

The trick is to never go shopping hungry. That applies to mum too. It's amazing how much junkie snack food one buys when they are hungry. ;) As to keeping the 2 -3 year old happy I found a "special" toy, reserved exclusively for outings and not from the regular rotaion made a huge difference. Also when the kids were that young they sat in the trolley and played with the toy and did not run around the shop attacking produce and stock. The "outings toy bag" is is also helpful when visiting others or going to appointments. I'd keep a spare bag with "outing toys". Also when shopping I never purchased too much in the one trip as it gets boring and tedious for everyone. With kids you are often out and about running errands and a quick duck in to the supermarket is better than a huge massively filled trolley.

Also easier to deal with when you get home and have to put it all away.

Looking forward to meeting you and Keshwar. You two and Poodie can feed me to the hounds for making my runt walk on a lead rather than carry her in a Paris Hilton style handbag. You know, I'm just too lazy. She has 4 legs so she can bloody well use them.

Aussie - poor Pancake?:rofl::rofl: I'll drop her off at your place for a week and I'll guarantee you one thing...when she wakes you up at 3am every morning for 7 days in a row you'll be thinking something else.

We're going to need shots of Zac (Irish Wolfhound for those who don't know him) and Cakes together - but be prepared for IW slobber!! :scared:

Perhaps what is really needed here is a cowgirl outfit for Pancake and a saddle for Zac.

Seriously think the stores should follow some of them around with a trolley and make the parents pay for all the product the kids have ruined often whilst the parents look on saying nothing or worse making the child put back a pack and get one from the back because their kids have drop, smashed, crushed it.

...or opened it and taken a bite out of it.

I've never understood why some parents feel they have a right to feed their kids before they pay for the goods! :mad

Though I may have to start to use them again if I'm now being judged for opening a packet of bickies before I pay for them. All to keep the peace in the supermarket!

I really don't care if you pay before or after so long as you do pay.

The original comment that inspired the comment that inspired your wrath was actually about the product we pick up to buy, only to find it has been half consumed and then put back onto the shelf. Now that's just revolting, and I don't blame the kids, I blame the parent/s in this case. Nothing worse than to see a slightly sucked food item in the packet you were about to purchase.

One person took it a little out of context and offended your sensibilities but seriously, feel free to keep going exactly as you are, I for one don't have the slightest issue so long as you are taking it all with you and not leaving a trail of gooey, semi-masticated, mangled or smashed products behind on the shelves.

My mother used to work in a supermarket. You can be charged with stealing for letting your children eat food before you have paid for it whether or not you had intended to pay for the item. Tasting a grape before you buy a bunch is also considered stealing. Supermarkets do not push the rule tho, they do not have enough staff to police it. The number of people that do not pay for eaten food outweighs people who do. I have taught my Daughter that she cannot open anything until its paid for.

This is the most comprehensive thread I've seen on DOL! I think we could just cover every topic in this thread and not have any others. 30 pages down, 50 here we come (without anyone making it go poof) :D

I don't have kids but I have been known to open a bottle of water whilst shopping when I was really thirsty... Then pay for the half finished bottle at the end with everything else...probably good that I don't have kids to corrupt in such a manner ;)

Coles has an excellent shopping delivery service, order on their website and they deliver to your door for about $10 extra. I hear Woolworths' one is good these days too.

I for one plan to do the vaaaaast majority of my shopping this way once I have a kid!

I hope for your sake they improve their service by the time you start your family, I have tried both, plus one ( I can't remember their name ) Green Groceries are us? I tried them for about 10 mths. Every 2nd order had several items 'out of stock' or miserable fruit veg. Found I was having to go out to shop anyway to replace them. Though I may have to start to use them again if I'm now being judged for opening a packet of bickies before I pay for them. All to keep the peace in the supermarket!

Could always just leave them with the grandparents/aunty/baby sitter on the day you do the shopping, don't have to bring them with you

I wish I could but there are no grandparents or aunties 'on call' I'm not that lucky. So yep I do have to bring him.

My apoligies LizT, and yes I have my "outing toy bag" just feeling very touchy about the constant judgement people seem to enjoy heaping on parents. I feel I'm one of the few people who an relate to both sides of the fence, decades of being childless, and a new life of being a mother. I became a mother 6 weeks short of my 44th birthday. (that may explain why I have no in built baby sitters so I can shop in peace) I have to tell you if I felt judged for being childless and considering my dogs as my family, that was nothing compared to becoming a mother. And it starts the very moment you fall pregnant, I never knew there was so much nastiness out there (as you experienced on the plane) its been a real eye opener. BTW I would have been happy to sit next to you and your baby on the plane. Better than the drunk bloke I had to sit next to from Sinapore to London last year. He refused to move out of his seat so I could get out and go to the toilet. He insisted I climbed over him so he could sleep off the booze!!! Worst flight ever!!

Yes actually, I've always done the shopping with my now 3 year old and we love going together. I usually have food and a drink with me wherever we go but if I get caught out and she is so starving that she cannot wait (which only happens if she chooses to skip a meal I've made for her, because you can easily feed your child regular meals) then absolutely I will take an apple through the checkout before I allow her to eat it, to do otherwise would be stealing and that isn't something I want to teach her is ok. Just today we were shopping and a girl about 3-4 years old was wondering around helping herself to hand fulls of grapes over and over while her parents said and did nothing, which I found absolutely disgraceful. You can win, it is entirely possible to do one, or all, of the following: Not shop when your child is starving, take your own food with you and/or pay for something before your child eats it. And it is everyone's business because when people steal it all adds up to the increased prices we all pay.

I would LOVE that option, sadly it is not available and even when it is they won't come out this far!!! I have two kids - that is why they ahve double trolleys, all kids can have a bad day but I think they can all learn to go shopping and deal with the fact, and not be terrible :)

Hmmm, seems hard to imagine the world is running out of people to stock it. We seem to be sucking the earth dry as it is!

When you hear of the Brazilian government deforresting parts of the Amazon to find food producing land it's something to worry about and Im sure will spread to other countries :(

Well they should buy up some of our agricultural land like many other countries are doing - we don't know how much has been sold off though because our wonderful government does not bother to keep a register.

off topic . . . but inappropriate finger pointing needs to be noted:

The Brazilian government has historically, hastened deforestation by building roads and making land grants. . . .like the Australian and US governments (to name a few), Actually, Brazilian land grants in the Amazon generally required that half the forest be left intact, though little was done to enforce the law. This is more than can be said for Oz or the US. The Brazilian government has not played a major direct role in deforestation. In the last decade (since Lula was elected), Brazil has made a lot of progress in decreasing the rate of deforestation, mostly by enforcing the law. As for land destruction, Australia has outpaced Brazil in causing extinctions and in land area cleared of woody vegetation. The rape of the southwest was not so dissimilar to Amazonian deforestation (or the clearing of savannah lands to the south and east of the Amazon). Main difference: more endemics in Australia and much more rapid land clearing. What was done, mostly, with chainsaws and machetes in Brazil was done with huge Catepillar dozers in Australia.

Nice to be so dam perfect. If I buy a pack of 6 rolls and my son ( in the trolly)( who hates shopping) wants one while I'm shopping AND the registers are busy I will damn well give it to him. Do Not call me a thief. I have worked for Coles for 20yrs. Do you think I would risk my job by stealing from my employer? You would be just as judge-mental and whinging if I had a tired crying child. And to suggest that giving a 2yr old a roll is teaching him to steal is laughable. Wish I lived in your perfect black and white world. My God, just another sanctimonious ridiculous mother.....later, I'm out of here..

The problem with opening packets or letting your child eat something before you pay for it is the supermarket staff don't know you were going to pay for it, they just see a child (or adult) munching away on unpaid for food.

There are a lot of people who go to supermarkets, open a packet, eat half the contents then leave the opened packet on the shelf. It's not up to the staff to decide if you are being truthful or not, they just ask that you pay for it first. Not that hard really, if you want to take your child shopping and they simply cannot go half an hour without eating then pack some home-made snacks that don't look like supermarket food. It just makes it so much easier on the staff.

Having worked in supermarkets I know how frustrating and often embarrasing it is to have to ask customers not to eat the food before paying and I have been verbally abused several times when I have asked customers about it (probably from the poster above by the sounds of it!).

Be careful what you wish for, my life is very far from being perfect or black and white and I'm not a perfect Mother. For the record, I wouldn't be judgemental about your tired and crying child, you aren't the only parent who has been on the receiving end of that and it would be nice if more people were understanding, especially since they don't know the cause. I'd probably offer to help if I saw an opportunity, although judging by your tone in this thread I expect it wouldn't be well received anyway. I do, however, draw the line at teach children that eating food they have not paid for is ok. How do you expect to teach your child that stealing is wrong if you don't model the right behaviour from an early age? If your son is two you'd have to be well aware that kids that young can and do pick up that sort of thing and if you've worked at Coles for 20 years you would know that plenty of people do it, many with no intention of paying for what they consume. There is nothing sanctimonious about teaching your children morals from an early age and all I did was offer you some easy alternatives for a behaviour you claimed was unavoidable in your tirade against LizT.

On this supermarket trolley nonsense . . . I'd say the complainers aren't showing that they don't like kids, they're showing that they're intolerant, self-righteous prudes. I sometimes eat things in the supermarket and have the checkers scan the packaging. I've asked if they mind. They say, no, it's fine. If the supermarket doesn't mind, why bitch about it? Supermarkets loose a lot more to people who take a five finger discount and walk out with some expensive gismo and a high-class steak in their pants than they do to people pacifying their toddlers. I'd guess that the screaming 2 yr old in the check out line is a much bigger negative to commerce than the Mum who allows the kid a treat while waiting at the counter.

I'm not overtly Christian, but I remember a Jesus quote along the lines of : "It's easier to save 10,000 sinners than it is to save one righteous man."

Hey, keep at it. Maybe we can get to 50 pages!

Yes, I see your point but...Sandgrubber but why put staff in the position of having to judge whether the person is having a snack and will or won't pay? There are Store security/Staff who will pull people up on this matter. You have no more way of proving that you will pay than they have that you wont. Until you have gone through that checkout it belongs to the store and not you. Fact.

BTW I've seen plenty of people help themselves to fruit, such as grapes and give their kids a handful, this is never paid for. I know it's only a few grapes but....if everyone picked just one flower at the Botanical Gardens would there be any at all for us to enjoy? Also saw a couple of kids about 12 open a packet of donuts and scoff the lot while their parents were shopping.
