hello everyone,

we are looking into getting a german shepherd. we have found a registered pure breeder, they have a 10 month old female ex show dog. We have met the puppy to see how it interacts with our 2 children aged 3 and 5, and how the childern are with the dog. The dog was very good with the kids, even though one was a bit scared the dog wasnt fazed, the owner says this dog has a very good temperement and would suit our family. She said if we take the dog and it doesnt work out, she is happy to take the dog back and refund our money.

im just asking what is an average price for this type of dog?

thanks very much

It is a real "how long is a piece of string" question I'm afraid, Whilst some see an older dog as coming with some of the pitfalls of puppy raising removed others see them as less desirable.

From my own experience I have paid far less than puppy price for an older youngster whilst also having paid the going puppy price for another. Personally I think anything up to the current puppy price is acceptable unless you are buying a proven show prospect as such.

Average price for a purebred, pedigreed dog out of the worst of its puppy phase that's had some training and is good with kids?

Priceless! :) But realistically - $1500-$2000? However it might be best to ask in the German Shepherd Dog thread in breed subforums or in the breed thread in Dogs 101.

I don't know how much a GSD is, but I think Telida is on the ball. It's like that old Mastercard add where the pucnch line was "Priceless"

Take the price of a puppy and add the cost of the following:

You need to factor in the cost benefit of what you will be getting in an almost mature girl. How much would you pay for all that training? The dog is most likely fully trained, well mannered, experienced around other dogs, toilet trained etc. You have met an almost adult GSD who gets along with your kids, so that's peace of mind ( of course you still need to supervise the kids and dog). How many things does the average puppy destroy before we get with their program? I know my girl killed a pair of new shoes, a few DVDs including a collectors edition, some books, and we thought we had her well supervised.

Your new girl will be fully vaccinated, another cost saving to factor in. Will the breeder desex her? possible saving again.

Unless you are experienced with dogs, there could also be a few toilet training accients with a puppy (factor in getting the carpet cleaned). Also factor in a few chewed belongings, plants dug out etc. If you factor in all that, and you pay what the breeder is asking for her pups, you are probably coming out ahead. You have 2 little kids too, so you remember sleep deprivation, how much would you have given for a good nights sleep?

I don't believe that you have to raise a dog from puppyhood to get the best result.

The strongest connection I have ever had with a dog is with a bitch that cam to me at 15months.

My OHs dog arrived at 3yo and you would not get a closer bond than they have.

Whilst pups are all fun and games for some, for others an older dog is simply the right choice.

Being older does not devalue them in my opinion.

If you wanted to look at it from the angle that a baby pup can be a bit of a gamble, then it makes it all very interesting ;)

They CAN be.. in terms of ultimate structure, temperament etc.

And out of that mouthing everything stage .. perfect for a family with kids :)

Absolutely agree with this. My Aussie, Brooklyn, is my heart dog and we have shared the greatest highs imaginable. He came to me at 9 months and was beautifully socialised with a great temperament. You can see what you get in an older pup.

My best dogs have been older dogs. I guess because you have kids you need to weigh up how much is the price of their safety with a new dog? I would be happy to pay $1500 for a well socialized GSD with basic obedience. I woudl actually prefer to get a GSD run on by the breeder at that age rather than a puppy age. It's good to know you have the breeder to fall back on if things don't work out

I am thinking my next BC will be one that is around 10 months or so. Young puppies are lots of work. If I could get a adolescent that has been with raised & socialised with its reputable breeder.

I too would snatch the chance you have been offered without hesitation. IMHO $1500 is a fair price, keeping in mind that alot of time & effort has gone into breeding/ raising/training this GSD. :)

When we unfortunately have to sell one of our older pups, they go for no less than our current puppy price. If I have done their hips and elbows, they will go for even more.

I think I know the breeder you are talking about and $1500 is a very good price for one of their juniors, especially with on-going support and back-up.

I'd snap her up :)
