Reasons Not To Own Your Breed

Ah grumpette, I love seeing your dogs.. Just awesome...

Yes, they are stunning!

Don't get a Golden Retriever if you can't handle not being able to find a complete pair of shoes.

It's a daily ritual for any of us to have to search for one of a pair! They are never chewed, just transported somewhere & left there.

Don't believe that GRs don't have drive, that they are lazy just because you see so many fat ones.

Well, ok, they can be lazy (I am always hurrying Honey up on our morning jog  ), but they are also very athletic dogs that need a decent amount of exercise (miss one day, ok, but no more) & generally have a high drive for birds. (or skywriting... *sigh*... you've never seen a dog take off so fast... )

And let's just say, the shedding... the shedding....   ALL DAY, EVERY DAY...

I sweep 3 times a day & still there is more.

Lucky she is the perfect dog otherwise. ;)

* and no she is NOT a long haired lab! (or a border collie? Wtf? The lady who said that to me last week must have been on crack  )

Don't get a Border Collie if you want a dog that........

- Doesn't shed.

- Always loves all other dogs.

- Is happy being ignored - for any period.

- Is not going to push you to play endlessly.

- Is easy to train for specific behaviours. I think it is a myth that BC's are easy to train. They are undoubtedly VERY willing workers and that makes them fun to train, but they anticipate and can be quite stubborn. Once they learn the wrong thing it is quite hard to unteach it.

- Is not going to need a LOT of socialisation.

- Is not going to find its own job if you don't have time to give it one.

- Is not going to potentially chase anything that moves.

- Is not going to be happy on its own for extended periods.

- Is happy going for one short walk around the block a couple of times a week.

These don't all apply to every BC, but I've observed them all in one or other of my dogs.

I would like to add:

Don't get a Border Collie unless you know how to train a dog. They are easy to train but you need to get it right first go and be able to be consistant with your body language. For a novice dog owner to start with a Border is like someone learning to drive in a Ferrari.

Most importantly don't get a Border unless you have a high IQ or the dog will outsmart you at every turn. Border Collies are experts at training their owners if they get half a chance.

They are the best breed in the world if you know what you are doing and a complete disaster if you don't.

I agree with the first one but absolutely not the second. A new person of course can own a Border Collie. We sell puppies to new owners all the time as long as they have a commitment to attend puppy preschool and basic obedience classes. I actually find the breed quite forgiving in terms of training.

Don't own a Chinese Crested if...

You want a lap dog - They are pretty independant little guys, they love your company and will show afection but would rather be in front of the heater or snuggled in their own bed than on you.

You want an outside dog - They are a toy breed and they are bald, 'nuff said. They like sunning themselves outside but shouldn't be outside dogs.

You have no money - Not because they are expansive to care for, rather because you will find yourself spoiling them rotten

Own a Chinese Crested if...

You wanted a cat but are allergic - Seriously, these guys tick all the cat criteria rather than the dog ones

Don't get a grey if you don't want a lap dog (well the front half sort of fits  )

Don't get a grey if you want a dog that doesn't cover you in hair

Don't get a grey if you want an independent dog as they love being with you

Don't get a grey if you love your lawn

Don't get a grey if you can't put things away (as they may vanish if left out particularly if its a treeasure like the car keys lol just ask my OH - keys were easily found where all the treasures are put - her bed)

Don't get a grey if you don't like coating a dog in cold/wet weather

Don't get a grey if you have a micro car

Don't own a Siberian Husky if...

You don't like hair - No matter how hard you try, you'll always have hair in your cuppa tea in the morning, in your dinner at night and best of all .. on your clothes and the floor inside!

You want a 'cupboard' dog - They're mostly not food orientated and most likely will NOT do what you ask them!

You don't like being answered back - They will talk back, tell them 'no' and they'll tell you no back!

Own one if..

You can handle being 'owned' by them

You can accept the fact you are wrong 99.99% of the time

most of all, You would love a dog that'll love you unconditionally, question why they have to do something and not just do it because you're waving some food in there face :p lol

I would disagree and say do get a grey if you love your lawn and garden, I've always had a lovely lawn no matter how many greys I have. They are usually a great dog for garden lovers to own compared to other medium to large breeds.

Not all of them tend to shed much either, some are very sparse coated.

I would add:

Don't get a grey if you want a dog that can endure hours of exercise. They have very little endurance, and too much exercise can cause problems.

Don't get a greyhound if you want a dog to let off lead in public areas. They enjoy running so much, and can cover a large distance very quickly. Not the easiest breed to teach recall either.

Don't get a stafford if you don't like farting....

I am sure it is an unwritten part of the breed standard, as has been mentioned on DOL many times over the years.

Most will insist on sharing everything with you... Your meals, bed, lounge, shoes and their slobbery toys..

They also consider themselves lap dogs... So if you don't like sharing everything Staffords are not for you.

Believe it or not they shed... Thousands of tiny little eyelash length hairs are everywhere and in everything.

I use a dyson and still manage to serve dinner with Staffy hair occasionally...

Hahaha :)

Don't get AmStaffies if...

1. You don't like when dogs lick

2. Definitely don't like farting/burping

3. You want to play/practice any sport that involves a ball (I was just shooting netball in my front yard and Harley was very helpful... If trying to pop my ball is helpful! Lol

4. You want to keep your house clean and leave things around, Bella likes to steal everything!

5. You don't like short spikey hairs in everything you own

6. If you like using the hose without watching dog acrobatics

7. If you don't want dogs that think you are part of the chair

8. Don't like being given consistent attention/affection/love

9. Are a worry wart! Lol recently there have been dog thefts in my area so I am paranoid about everyone at the moment!

Let's see...

Don't own a dalmatian if...

You aren't willing to put up with the pig-headedness :3

They are stubborn as anything.

You don't enjoy snow..

They don't shed, they SNOW hair, all year.

You think spots aren't fashionable.

Cause baby, they are alll about the spots *Z-click*

You enjoy having your own bed...and lap.

They LOVE being with you and all over you.

You hate exercise.

They LOVE to run.

You have small, chase-able objects.

See above.

You don't want to get argued with.

They will let you know what they think.

You enjoy fresh air

Dear LAWD they can drop some nasty stinks.

You like having a white dog

So far, my two have LOVED to dig and get nice and muddy.

Well, that's my two cents.

Reguardless, I still love my baby more than anything :3

Edit: More

You aren't willing to be careful with food

Since dals are prone to uric problems

You aren't willing to get specific shampoo's and skin products

Sensitive skin!

You don't have much money

They will chew through your wallet...literally and figuratively.

Oh gosh, where do I start?

Don't get a Husky if:

- You want a dog that obeys you.

- You want a dog that's easy to train.

- You want a dog that you can trust to come back if it gets out.

- You want a dog that won't give you the finger in the middle of a training session.

- You want a dog that will live in harmony with small animals even if its not used to them.

- You don't want a dog that sheds.

Probably stacks more, but they're the ones that have annoyed me lately, and my girl is pretty well trained.

Change Husky to Akita and you're set! In fact, you could probably change that to say don't get a spitz breed if those are your requirements.

Hugo obeys me, was easy to train, I trust him off-leash, he bends over backwards to please me during a training session until I get tired or bored.. Maybe I got a mentally retarded dog because he seriously isn't a pain in the ass that Spitz people keep insisting their dog "group" is just generally like

I would say don't get a Vallhund if you don't want to suffer a stroke every time they bark (which they will LOL, in a very loud, sharp, ear-piercing fashion). Also they shed a hell of a lot. "Moderate shedders" my arse. Can't think of anything else, but I'm particularly biased in thinking that every person should have a Vallhund

Oh, don't get one if you hate the constant thud of tennis balls dropped into your lap, though I haven't a clue if it's like that for all Vallhunds or not.

Yep Lulu is a SV and a couple of times she has given me a fright by giving a loud bark for no apparent reason  she doesn't bark much when she's inside but when she does it's LOUD! She will fetch a ball until she drops so I'd say you are spot on with that as a very vallhund trait too :)

I reckon Chihuahua's would have to be one of the easiest breeds to own, sure they yap and you can't leave them in the backyard they are inside dogs for sure, but I just find them so easy to manage and keep. But then I have a husky so next to him I think every other breed is easier lol!

Yeah, Siberian Husky - nuff said :p

I love to burp and fart (not necessarily in that order). Maybe I need to change my breed of choice?

They greys I cared for (had to feed them every afternoon weekdays, belong to a 'professional couple' who had no children and both worked in the city (over an hours commuting) and they got a second Grey to keep the first company. The first dug HUGE holes in the yard and now they have two greys who dig MASSIVE, HUGE holes in the yard. Is it any wonder? Boredom I should think. Greytmate, clearly your greys get the correct amount of attention and stimulation the breed requires.
