I recall a few years ago here the progress of a Canberra foster carer with a young ABPT bitch.

After several months, and a lot of work, it was clear that this was one of the breed hard wired for aggression with a low trigger. After much careful thought the youngster was PTS and in my view that was the only responsible course of action to take. :(

No, they are not all like that and I'd venture to suggest that its pretty uncommon but I'd hate for any person (be they APBT owner or not) to assume that because they know the cuddly marshmallow variety that they are all like that.

Indeed, assuming that you can 'handle' a dog because you have that breed has brought quite a few trainers unstuck over the years. 'evaluate the dog in front of you' is the usual mantra and as dog owners, we need to put aside our prejudices (be they negative OR positive) and do the same.

We breed to narrow the range of characteristics in a particular breed and to improve the likelihood of others but we don't eliminate variety.

I think a few folk have learned that lesson the hard way.

The real tragedy of BSL is that it stops owners of affected pups from allowing them to socialise and experience much dog to dog behaviour - if the owner is obeying the law. That's pretty much the case everywhere but here now but I have to say we don't see a lot of Pits coming through the gates at dog training - mores the pity (no pun intended). BSL also stops more people from meeting the type of pitbull that owners here are defending.

Greytmate & Telida,

I hope you read the rest of my comment where i am essentially agreeing with your comments... and your posts definitely have a place in discussion about dog ownership regardless of breed. (and i know you didn't only mean to infer you have to be careful with APBT's) totally agree with your posts.

However i feel thread may not have even been started had this interaction not been with a restricted breed. The sheer fact it had "pitbull" in the title had the masses coming to comment, and hopefully people learnt a little about their own dogs behavior.

I have witnessed my desexed 12 year old GWP bitch's neck being ripped open, by a pitbull, that entered our block from reserve next to it. No reason for attack, she just stood there on her home territory.

Why unfair vendetta against these dogs, their ( and some other breed's) reported actions speak for themselves?

Sorry you had that experience, but any breed can be aggressive... maybe was a dog aggressive dog, there are plenty of them........ doesn't mean they are spoken about as much, my parents maltese terrier is dog aggressive, she would do a lot more damage to another dog than Nala would thats for sure.

And you cant compare pittys in the US to the ones here, different culture....

Its actually pretty funny when we are walking the two and people steer clear of Nala but go to pat the maltese without asking..... and I have to quickly stop them and say its her you have to worry about... and guide their petting hands to Nala's direction.

It can be so hard not to judge a breed. I had a very bad experience with a black Lab as a child. It attacked me and bit my foot as I walked past a house on the way home from school. I used to go out of my way to avoid this home. The dog would always come running out of the driveway and scare the bejeezus out of me. It takes all of my rationale not to go cold when I see a black Lab even today. Logically I know the truth, I mean I don't even feel the same chill when I see yellow or chocolate labs, but emotionally there is still a scared small child in there.

Sorry to hear about your experience but incidents like this are not limited to pitbulls, or dogs that people think are pitbulls... like all the attacks in the list "pitbull type" WTF! they could write any other "type" that could also fit the bill!, except the type the media has portrayed has led to attacks being reported as pitbulls, FFS!

I have been bitten by a collie, & mixed breed, but i didn't take a stab in the dark and say it must've been "pitbull type" like the thousands that get reported. If people chose to believe Wikipedia then they will never learn.

I'm certainly not denying attacks that have been perpetrated by known pitbulls, and accept that they as other breeds are involved in serious dog attacks and society as a whole needs to generally learn more about responsible animal ownership...

There are also labs and retievers in that list you linked to, do you prejudice against them as well? I am sorry to hear what happened, but dog aggressive dogs are found in EVERY breed.

Yes, there are aggressive dogs in every breed, not many of those breeds are banned by international airlines, that will not carry them. Why?? Nor are they purposely bred to fight other dogs, gnawl through them and kill, are that determined, once in a fight, that you can not seperate. Sorry to dissapoint, I love labs and retrievers, pointers, cattle dogs, sheep dogs, poodles, gsp's, all the littlies. Forgive if I have missed any, I am not concerned about their behaviour at all. I never heard any bad news about Rottweilers before. You cannot make pussycats out of a fighting bred dog breed ( Kampfhund), you can keep on trying. If you own one, microchip, register, desex, muzzle, keep contained, there are laws to be obeyed. Or run to your vet, make him lie for you, and record a different breed on the piece of paper ( as is happening). What next?

Darlin go back in your 70's, 80's see what the "killer dog" of that time was... rotties got a run so did GSD....government is getting reports some irresponsible dog owners pitty has bitten someone and boom they need to have a quick fix....do you really think the culling and banning of this breed is the solution?? no, education is the solution... it doesnt help that the media is not interested unless its a bully breed of some sort... some roosters were bred for fighting... iv nearly had my eye gouged out by one of them.. you think there is a ban on that? no....and tbh most small dog owners are the worst half the time... and a dog in a freaking cage and muzzled all its life IS NO LIFE FOR A DOG, lock your dog up in a concrete cage 24/7... see how he/she likes it

You've obviously only googled to find bad news about pitbulls that confirms to enhance your opinion. Plenty of incidents including Rottis, and all the other breeds you love...

Why do people continually harp on about "bred to fight other dogs"!! Originally yes, i have not met one pitbull that was bred to fight and they've all been really nice, and just because a dog may have the propensity to be DA, doesn't mean it will attack people and this is well documented in any history you can find about pit fighting dogs, a HA dog will not be tolerated.

Perhaps you should get out and try to meet one.

I knew one (for several years, saw him daily), that was bred to fight, trained to fight and rescued after a very successful fighting career (dumped due to a broken leg). Damn nicest dog I have EVER met. Soft mouth, gentle temperament, no aggression whatsoever. I could take high value food items from him without him blinking. He was sweet and smoochy and calmly protective-never EVER bit anyone but on occasion when there was a threat he kept himself between me and the threat at all times. There was one occasion where he encountered a puppy-we panicked-he was delighted and played with that puppy through the fence Like a well bred 8 week old Labrador.

He was a joy, and I miss him and think of him daily. I cant say I believe in an afterlife but god I hope there is one, if only for me to see my precious, dearest friend again.

To those that say ALL pitbulls are horrible man eating beasts and should all be culled, I think of your ignorance and hate when compared to a beautiful, sweet, kindhearted little brindled man who was lucky enough to to have met someone who saw beyond the outside, and I know who's world I would rather live in.

Edit cos I got all emotional and forgot how to spell :o

you need to go and have a look at some gov bite stats... I work with a large number of dogs daily (vet clinic and dog training) and bull breeds are the least of my daily worries, you should meet the majority of the rotties that come into my work, do I judge the breed? not at all, despite the number of bites and near misses ive received from them I never miss the opportunity to get a cuddle from a balanced rotti, they are snuggle bugs when socialised :D ... I also would never go within 10 feet of a GSP breeder's dogs that I know... nasty pieces of work... coz thats how they were raised... also watched my friendly dog have half its ear ripped off a greyhound who blindsighted us and grabbed her before either of us could react, we were lucky she didnt lose her ear completely.. yet I adore greyhounds! that particular dog just happened to be raised wrong, thats all.... I agree with Bullish, your post reeks of ignorance... how many bull breed dogs have you personally met?? get your head out of the sand and go and get some more experience and stop listening to the garbage the media is ramming down everyones throat...

ETA: cant spell!

ok, just realised my above post sounded a little harsh and I do apologise for the 'outburst' but you seriously shouldnt be basing your opinion on a breed by one incident you witnessed and what you have 'heard' via media... humans love a scapegoat and in this generation it just happens to be the pitbull... they are dogs, no worse than any other, they just happen to attract the worst kind of owners, remove the pitbulls and those owners will sadly just move to another breed and ruin them instead...

This is exactly what will happen.

German Shepherds were banned in the '70's and that didn't change bite stats, neither will this. Unfortunately, by the time the idiots in charge realise this, thousands of inoccent dogs will have been killed.
