I am using it for my Staffy, we think she might have had a bleeding ulcer in the past. Have been using it for some months now.

I understand the risk is probably the same with long term NSAID use but it's marginally safer as it can (and should) be given on an empty stomach.

If you are talking for osteoarthritis, apparently Trocoxil is the latest and greatest as it gives a continuous slow release dose.

Hope that helps. :)

Yes thanks. Coco (13 yr old Brittany) has spondylosis and has been on a short course of carprieve, which worked quite well, but his blood screen came back with a slightly elevated kidney value. The vet said it may be nothing, but if he has to go back on NSAIDs then I'd prefer to start with the safest option.

I haven't heard of Trocoxil though, so might read up on that. Thanks.

Looks very interesting, althouth I am concerned about the fact that if there are ill effects, you can't just "stop" taking it.

Correct, that is one concern raised.

On the anthropomorphic side, I'm a little bit dubious as the dog can't tell you - "oh yeah it's good for 3 weeks then it starts to run out"...ya know? :p Sensitive dogs will obviously make it known a bit better, but stoic dogs are fairly hard to read.

We routinely use onsior over rimadyl/metacam/etc, have found it works well and is safer.

You do need a 5 day washout period though when swapping from one to the other :)

We do not like troxocil, what if you need to give contraindicated drugs during the month period? You can't take it back out if adverse reaction, can't use any other NSAIDs, did have one person try it and they felt it wasn't as effective as the rimadyl they had been on.

Is the 5 days needed just to change to onsoir? have only ever waited 2 days before when changing nsaids. I think my boy would be in a wheelchair if he was off the metacam that long!
