Pollywaffle
Speaking to a very senior, highly professional person last week about dogs...she said "my sister's bitch had to be put down because she had mated with a much larger dog and the impact on her body would have been too traumatic if she were to have her pups....that's why I had a boy dog; at least when he has done the business, he can run away'! Totally serious... Thought to myself..what hope is there....?

Fordogs
I shake my head and wonder just where these people manage to come out with such garbage. Hope your sister didn't listen to him. What breed of dog does your sister have ? and what breed mated with her? If there was a huge difference in size the bitch could be treated by her vet to abort the possible litter or even have the bitch desexed.

LizT
Fifty years ago my father would only own a male cat because he didn't want to have to "deal with kittens", meaning dispose of them. Did he desex his male cat so it didn't contribute to this problem? Of course not, that costs money! It was only when I got older and our cat had been missing a few days and came home clearly having been fighting and had a horrible maggot infected abcess that had exploded on this head (sorry everyone ) that even he couldn't argue about going to the vets with it and the vet convinced him to also have teh cat desexed while he was under having his wound cleaned and stitched. Since then all our cats were desexed. So it's sad to see that this attitude can still persist today. This persons sister's dogs need'nt have been PTS, it could have been spayed and if pregnant delt with at the same time. Surely the vet who put the bitch to sleep would have told them that!! Something doesn't sit right with this story??? Edited January 29, 2012 by LizT

Pollywaffle
It's a throw-away society and I think that's what got me so much with this conversation, the fact that the welfare of ALL dogs involved, was so unimportant. Rather like that Hayden Insurance add when he says..."and you'd even insure your dog"...as if to imply, what a waste of money, something so unimportant. I tell you, when the conversation was over I sat there and thought..well...as I said before, metaphorically shook my head.

But don't give up, you then will meet someone who actually asks questions and wants to learn more (on the subject of responsible pet ownership) on occasion and it bolsters you. fifi
that person sort of reflects a very uninformed train of thought from many years ago (and was surprisingly prevalent even amoung top dog people) that the bitch would be 'tainted' if she mated a Xbred or another breed & was often shot. I remember as a youngster speaking to an old breeder who still though that way. Common sense...so rare is should be a superpower ! fifi

Well they wanted a younger dog now so they left it at her mothers just for a holiday... The next week they brought home a pup so couldn't possibly take the older dog back ... Unbelievable, how can you turn off your feelings for a dog you have had since a pup :-( anyway the mother wasn't happy but has accepted the dog as she won't put it to sleep.. At least it will live out the rest of its life with someone that is now bonding to him...
WeimMe
I would think that you would have a hard time finding a vet that would do that to an otherwise healthy dog. Would they not just abort the pups and spey?

Rosaline
People baffle me, they really do. And yes, no matter how intelligent someone is, brainpower doesn't always equal common sense. It also seems that in this day and age people are letting their kids make all the decisions! One of the most 'professionally accomplished' women I know recently bought a puppy from a petshop, even though all her FB friends tried to talk her out of it (they wanted a puppy NOW and she "couldn't let the kids down"). Then the other very smart, triple degreed, friend of mine who went to "visit a breeder who had all these different breeds of beautiful designer puppies", and they HAD to take one home then and there as it was a 3 hour round trip and again, "The kids were desperate to take one home". My little one is 6, she knows we are getting a puppy, but has been told that we are waiting until we can get "the right puppy", and it may take months. It's a great lesson. Sorry, went a bit off topic there with my ranting...

I'm related to people who when can't be bothered with the animal anymore just open the gate and 'it will find itself a new home' or 'someone will pick it up and look after it'. It still happens around Geelong too, if in doubt let them wander, someone else will be responsible on your behalf Conversely, take your untrained, unsocialised and now high maintenance crazy to the pound because they will ALL find new homes! Despite the fact there is another 50 JUST LIKE YOURS! I seemed to have missed the mail out of rose tinted glasses ...
