Gretel
Hi all you good people who are clever about these things :D At the moment I have a Canon Ixus. I want to buy a new camera to take good pics of the dogs. I had toyed with the idea of a DSLR but basically I am rather lazy and don't want all the hassle of learning how to use it properly. A man at Harvey Norman suggested the new Nikon J model (I think it was the J?). He told me I'd be able to get pretty good photos without having to learn and that it is really fast so would be good for what I'm after. Any thoughts please? TIA :)
tdierikx
Any Canon or Nikon DSLR should be easy enough to use straight out of the box - they have some very nice preset modes that give great pics... all you need to do is point it in the right direction and push the button. I love my Canon 450D - and have never yet tried to use it in manual mode. T.
helen
Firstly, it is the user that makes a good photo, the camera just helps :) This is what I want - http://www.canon.com.au/For-You/Digital-Cameras/G1X-Camera I just pickup up a 2nd hand G10, which is a much older version of this, and it is a great camera except for the noise. This new model looks brilliant, and noise problem solved
persephone
Firstly, it is the user that makes a good photo, the camera just helps :) Those Nikons look pretty useful ! If you just want decent photos and don't want to have to carry 'round extra lenses , etc ..then maybe have a look at some of THESE ? You can also check out photos taken with a particular camera on flickr HERE ..so you can see what they are capable of :) Have fun!

tdierikx
Before I bought my Canon 450D, I used my Powershot S5 - it took great photos - check some out here... http://woosie.net/photogallery/index.php ... and here... http://s6.photobucket.com/albums/y220/tdierikx/S5%20Zoo%20photos/ Now check out a comparison to the S5 Zoo photos to the ones I took recently with the 450D... http://s6.photobucket.com/albums/y220/tdierikx/Zoo%205-11-2011/ Funnily enough, I still have the S5, and can't take a decent photo with it nowadays... go figure? I tend to use it to do video instead now... T.
tlc
I was going to upgrade my SLR but I decided to go a different way with a smaller camera still with interchangeable lenses but not an SLR, These new types still have a big sensor like an SLR but don't work the same way. Not exactly sure of the right way to explain how these types of cameras work, This one is similar (different brand) to the one Helen mentioned the G1X which I really liked but they aren't out till around March. Heres is a LINK and ANOTHER ONE I only got it today so these are just a few snaps I took this evening, It came with two lenses, its nice and compact and much lighter than the SLR. I am really pleased with it so far. Whoops forgot to mention the brand its a Samsung NX 11. :) Edited January 22, 2012 by tlc
helen
If you don't want to wait Olympus PEN cameras are a great option, a mirrorless camera like TLC mentioned. Panasonic and Olympus developed these together. If you are in Sydney, are you anywhere near Digital Camera Warehouse, their staff are great and very knowledgeable. you can read about the different cameras here: http://www.dpreview.com Thanks Pers :D Though I am a little disappointed to learn that good photos depend on the user too! :p  Nothing personal LOL. It is for anyone reading, it just cracks me up walking through some stores (not necessarily camera stores) with the staff saying this camera takes good pictures  Edited January 22, 2012 by helen
