Guest _MADCAT_
Hey all, I have an 11 month old 50kg Bullmastiff, Frank. Frank has had his basic obedience but last night we had an incident where a dog set him off and he pinned the other dog and no matter how hard I tried to pull him off, just simply wouldn't let go until the lady let go of her dog and her dog ran off and I managed to lift his feet off the ground to stop him... The other dog was not hurt and the lady didn't want any of my details as she knows my dog and knows I do training with him and can always see me and frank at the local park. Both of us were very shaken from the incident, but that's not what I want to get involved with on this post as I've already PM'ed a great trainer on here asking for advice regarding this situation. My question is, Can anyone from ADELAIDE recommend a good dog trainer / obedience class that I can take frank to just to get his basic / intermediate and advance training done? Frank is a good dog, he has NEVER done anything like this before so I'm wanting to get on top of it before it happens again... I'm located in Para Hills but willing to travel anywhere for a great training class / trainer. Thanks in advance, Josie & Frank...
MsKatie
Para districts are good -they meet on Sunday mornings and aren't too far away.

Rileys mum
Gawler dog training club is great too. Bit further out than Para districts but worth the drive in my opinion. Very positive helpful club.
Mrs Rusty Bucket
I'm surprised KHM didn't mention Mark Singer... http://www.caninetraining.com.au/ He's recommended by Steve Courtney who I like for problem dogs. My dog obedience club (SAODC - South Parklands) would probably accept your dog on the basis that it wears a muzzle until everyone is sure it won't do the pin the dog and freak everybody out thing again. They're quite good at dealing with dog aggressive dogs - but there are several within the club that nobody expects to be any different so I'm not so sure how good they are at fixing the problems. Another one of the Delta - all reward based training mob is Bodil at Adelaide Pet Dog Training http://www.petdogtraining.com.au/home.html But i'm not sure how well that method alone works on aggressive dogs. Or if owners have the patience, persistance and consistency to follow it through. I think I'd be looking for a combination of methods. Ie I think I wouldn't want to use aggression to sort aggression but I would want to prevent the behaviour from happening and stop it in a hurry if it does despite my best efforts, and a treat won't do it short term. Guest _MADCAT_
Already emailed Mark.. :) waiting for his reply so that's why I posted here. Will have a look at the places suggested on here thank you! He's a good dog and will eventually try train him to be a security dog for work I want to eventually do but for now I want to make sure he doesn't decide to take it upon himself to protect me again.... wasn't a nice situation but no one was hurt so that's one thing. I knew from the get go when I decided to get a Bullmastiff that he would need a lot of training considering how big he will get. His mum is 50kg and his dad is a 70kg UK import But will call up some places during the week when im free. I'm willing to travel to gawler etc.. distance doesn't bother me when it comes to my pup... I just wish I was in Melbourne to goto one of their trainers. ;-) Thanks everyone!
MsKatie
Absolutely would recommend Mark - didn't mention him as i didn't even think of him - I read it as the OP was looking for ongoing training. Good that you have booked to see him though - I know he does group socialization classes or he may have recommendations. ETA -Mark has online booking for a consultation now too on his website Edited January 21, 2012 by KelpieHoundMum
Guest _MADCAT_
Just thought I'd update everyone, Mark got ahold of me and I'm going to his obedience days every fortnight and see how it goes from there... Mark said what frank did was not aggressive and to not worry at all but understands the fact I'm only a small person and want to have total control of my bullmastiff. Really excited to be able to talk to mark about his knowledge of dogs and training!
Zug Zug
Another vote for Mark Singer - glad you have contacted him. He's helped me with some issues lately and he has been very helpful and also reassuring and sensible.
