Diva
I found the reason why Shelley and Rascal has put back on the weight they lost its this pet mince. It just looks like I have 2 dogs that can't tolerate high fat foods. It sounds like they tolerate the mince just fine, it just provides more calories than their lifestyle can use up. If Shelley doesn't run around on the oval and there is no medical reason why she can't take exercise, you need to walk her. If you think her hips are a problem you need to get that checked out and find exercise regimes that suit her. If her hips are bad, not letting her be fat is absolutley crucial. Extra weight will cripple a dog with hip problems. More exercise, lower fat meats, a lower calorie premium kibble, and bulk up the meal with veggies like mashed pumpkin if you need to use a filler until they reach their target weight. As Danois said, it's all completely and exclusively within your control.
tlc
My guys eat Black Hawk (the light variety) is their main diet, they get a small cup each a day (cooper gets 2, he's bigger) and that's it, twice a week they get chicken necks or wings and the occasional bone. They could survive on Black hawk alone but I give them the bones for a little variety and teeth. Sometimes if there is left overs (which isnt very often) depending what they are they get this mixed in with their food but I reduce the amount of kibble. Just wanted to add you wrote in your first post " I was thinking of buying turkey wings, chicken wings, frames, legs, beef and lamb meaty bones" Why do they need all of this if they are on black hawk? I believe BH is a good dry food but you might need to consider something a bit lighter. Here's the Nutro link http://www.nutro.com.au/dry-dog-food-light.aspx for comparison. The trouble with having multiple dogs with different needs is that you don't always have the convenience of being able to feed the same thing to each dog... WeimMe
Maybe switching to low fat kibble? My dog has to have a very low fat diet due to chronic pancreatitis and lost her excess weight over a period of a few months without having to change the amount that she ate or significantly increasing exercise once we made the switch. I'm sure that her general activity level helped as she is fairly active anyway, but the weight loss was effortless and she didn't seem any hungrier than she usually does. She can't eat anything else but the low fat kibble and sometimes a little bit of very lean meat.
Crisovar
It sounds as if you need to get Shelley thoroughly examined, if she is in pain she will be reluctant to exercise, meanwhile take her swimming in a dog pool, excellent exercise low impact. You need to get her moving.
BC Crazy
I don't buy pet mince at all for that very reason. The fat content. I buy chic frames, & human grade roo mince from Woolies. Very lean & high in protein. They also have Black Hawk dry food each day. :) Edited January 20, 2012 by BC Crazy
Double Lab Love
MTS, I have struggled with my two Labs' weight over the last 12 months - mainly Tippi as she is a "good doer" on any food.. What has really given me results over the last few months..all gained from the wise poeple on DOL Early morning 6 km walk - lots of hills and either 45 mins swimming in the evening or another walk... I feed twice due to them being a bloat prone breed : Breaky: Chicken neck or leg plus one small cup of RC Lab Dinner - human grade mince (whatever is on special) lots of grated /veges /steamed pumpkin veges etc.. might swap mince with tuna or sardines 1-2 times a week... if they have been excercising more then a might add a dollop of cottage cheese or yoghurt Tango always gets a little more as he is bigger and i am the always supervise when they eat so never any stealing of food from Tippi... They also get omega 3/6/9 and VAN joint supplement daily... plus I have been using the CALM supplement from Petark which has been helping with tippi's on lead reactivity... Weekends breakfast is usually a roo tail or a turkey neck ( depending what i have thwawed) and one night week they get a turkey drumstick... Snacks : raw carrot/apple and before dinner - a slice of low fat cheese ( highlight of their day ) That is also their cue for bed time... The veges are a godsend as a filler esp for Tippi and the swimming really strips the weight... I have taught them to retreive water frisbees and now they would retrieve for hours if i let them.... maybe you need to find something similiar for Shelley :) My two love them and we have turned it into a real game and with them being so comptetive I can't believe how fast they are swimming now... edited for spelling - having a shocker Plus cheese snack is just before bedtime - a few hours after dinner !
