PAX
Whats going on with her ears? And why are you playing fetch games on rocks and wire? They refused to stand up so she shall forever be a Womble :p That was under a roadbridge, she's learning sure footing and to search for things in awkward situations as well as novel sounds (reverberating traffic noise of passing cars, echos etc). She was over 12 months when we did this and it wasnt for long. She comes from a long line of mountain goat Malinois  if there is something to clamber over she will. Her mother managed to make it up onto the roof of the breeders house one day O_o If I didnt believe she was capable of doing it safely I wouldn't have her doing it. Well I'm sure my Mal would of cut his feet and mouth to bits doing that at Malinois speed, something I wouldn't risk, maybe once but not multiples. And I wouldn't be saying ready spaghetti...... PAX
http://www.youtube.c...player_embedded These dogs are titled...No thanks you can have them. These are dogs that had to pass a test to be in the ring, the decoy did not even put real pressure on the dogs. That is the bitework of a major conformation show in Germany and ALL these dogs have SchH titles Is this the reason Germany has dumped German Shepherds from the forces, swapped to Malinois:)
Aidan3
LOL, where's "mace" when you need him/her? Where did you find that video, Bobby_the_Samoyed? Gosh, no wonder you are put off SchH
mace
You can get a SchH 3 dog, awesome at doing the circuit he has been taught to do a thousand times. Bring him into a real life situation, where some guy is mugging you on the street thats where i would want the dog to react. Schutzhund isn't personal protection training, you may as well use a dog trained in Flyball and hope it will protect you on the street. It's not that dogs trained in sport are no good at protection, the reason they are no good at protection is because they aren't trained in personal protection, they are trained in sport, otherwise they are the same dogs taken on a different training path. Aidan3
My neighbour selected and trained dogs in the defence force for several years. This will tread on everyone's toes, but the fact is he selected dogs (GSDs and Rotts mostly) from the pound. As adults. If they wanted to chase a ball all day and didn't back off when pushed, they got the job.

The strength, courage, drive, willingness to work, and love for the handler are unrivaled in the correct GSD. Anyways if you are intrested here is a debate on the topic http://www.alpinek9forums.com/reasons-for-malis-vs-gsds-t726.html

I understand what you are saying. I know that ideally the GSD is the type of dog that should adapt to any work/sport chosen. But would you personally choose the same pup if you intended it for sport or for PP? Btw i am still learning so im pretty new to all this. I have read extensively on the topic and just expressing my opinion Edited January 13, 2012 by Bobby_The_Samoyed

Nekhbet
Well I'm sure my Mal would of cut his feet and mouth to bits doing that at Malinois speed, something I wouldn't risk, maybe once but not multiples. And I wouldn't be saying ready spaghetti...... I believe in teaching a dog patience. It wasnt a race it was helping her to be deliberate in her actions through play. I had actually started just tossing the same stick about in the area around for her to find and progressed up to this. I don't believe in 'Malinois speed' and a dog hacking itself up, they don't have to spend life wound up like energizer bunnies. Sorry, did I do something horribly terribly wrong playing with my dog? Well in my opinion yes you did. My dog has patience, he doesn't eat my car or house as you have said yours does. But if I say fetch, he goes at it hard, seeking my reward, as he should. I wouldn't risk him being hurt ....EVER. Rocks and wire are not a good risk or training enviroment for a working dog IMO, but maybe my dog has more commitment to training than yours. My dog certainly doesn't spend his life wound up like an energiser bunny.

My dog certainly doesn't spend his life wound up like an energiser bunny Well gosh darn it I'll just throw everything in because on an impromptu stop at an underpass/park I decided to play with my dog while OH played on the same rocks with his RC rock crawler, I'm sure you saw that bit in the video too? I'm sure I'm one step away from an abusive spouse for letting my OH hop up there too. As for eating the car that is my other Malinois. I'm sure you also would have read about the issues I had with her while she was going through that stage, the part where I was working against very poor critical period socialisation issues? How many hours a day I socialised that dog after her not leaving a garage until 10 weeks of age? Anyway ... I really am surprised how a tiny snippet of me just having a bit of fun with my dog could turn into this slinging fest. I expected a little more maturity from you Pax, considering you have not personally seen my dogs and how they behave in general. As for your dog, which I have never seen and barely heard anything about, I dont know that how a dog with patience could cut up its paws and mouth just clambering up over a few rocks unless he really didnt have any and went at 'malinois speed' as you call it. I don't know, you tell me which one it is?
Jeff Jones
You have 2 different goals in mind and dogs from 2 different lines. Training is going to be different, I have trained my dogs in similar areas to the one shown in Nekhbets video, not too far down the road from you PAX is a similar bridge with rocks where I train my dog. Steve K9Pro
K9: As for Pax's dog, I doubt he would cut his feet going up there, he would just fly up in a single bound lol and I can vouch for Prix, he is one super dog...

As in Nordenstamm Prix? My bitch doesnt need to learn how to jump, she's got her grandfathers genetics to help her do that. I'd rather her do what she's doing, I don't have anything to prove with a dog that flings itself into novel situations and hurts itself.
PAX
If I told my dog to fetch, he would, I wouldn't need to "ready spaghetti" him, he would just want to get it for me as fast as he could. I wouldn't risk him hurting his paws and mouth on that rock and wire terrain as I know how hard and fast he tries to do what I ask. N, if thats what you like and want, bless you, but I dont get why you would post that clip if relation to the OP. Isn't this a PP topic.
