Tara8430
Just wondering if you guys know if stop barking collars (either citronella or electric pulse) are safe to use on puppies older than 3 months?
persephone
Not advisable ....at that age, training/behaviour modification is ideal . Have you seen one in use , or is there a puppy problem barker? Maybe we can help? What age is pup, when is the barking a problem, and what else has been tried? Basically she is barking when she is put into her yard which is about 4x4m with a shed a kennel a sand pit and toys. I have been feeding her down there to get a positive association and i did have her spending up to an hour down there last week however something has changed in the past 4 days. She now doesnt seem to play and just stands there very cranky and barks. I thought a citronella collar might be enough to stop her from doing this. Appart from that she doesnt bark. She is 14 nearly 15 weeks. What do you suggest? Edited January 10, 2012 by Tara8430
**Super_Dogs**
I also would not use a bark collar on a pup so young. Is she doing this when you are home? I am seen you in the lab forum - is this you lab pup?

Yes she is doing it when i am at home however i wanted to be able to let her have the morning in there when i am at work. I dont want to have to resort to a bark collar on her but not sure what else i should do at this stage.... Also dont want to annoy the neighbours too much, one isnt the nicest. megan_
How long is she confined to the 4m x 4m for? How often? What is she doing before she is put in there (eg walked, trained etc)?
Tara8430
How long is she confined to the 4m x 4m for? How often? What is she doing before she is put in there (eg walked, trained etc)? Basically i get her meal ready and say down to your yard and she sits and waits perfectly. At this stage i have been aiming for 1/2 hour after every meal. I started with 5 mins went to 10 mins and had been gradually increasing, making sure to get her out before she started barking. Go down, telling to sit while i open the gate which she does, i clip the gate open and she stays sitting, praise her and give her a treat and then say come. This was working fine, the only thing is that she wouldnt relax into the kennel onto her bed and rest. The only thing which has changed is that there was a small fence in the yard made from woodern trellis that was fencing off a small garden bed ( my last lab used the yard with the garden bed in it, she was older and never touched it) anyways Abbey found this a place to sit while she was down there, it was only about 40cm wide obviously as she is growing and applying more pressure to the woodern trellis it has come down and is now not in a condition to put back up. So in a way her safety spot has been removed i think this has caused the barking. I have since moved the kennel to try and encourage her into that into that spot added her kong with stuffing but she doesnt seem to want a bar of it. Now im not sure what else to do. I was going to try and get a pvc pipe that would act like a tunnel for her to go into but not sure where i could get one.
**Super_Dogs**
I was going to suggest starting with a small amount of time in the pen and building up the time - but it sounds like you have done this. My other suggestion is to give her food dispencing toys so she has a positive association with the area. I use Kongs, plastic bottles with a few holes and teats inside and peanut butter cups (pastic cup with peanut butter smeared at the bottom). My girl loves it when I go to work!! I think the other important thing to remember is - she is a lab - so when you are home she want to be with you. I have a great articple on labs and it says " The things that people love the most about Labradors - their love of people - can also be their biggest problem." My pup at her age also would have cried if I had left her outside on her own. I would say she is crying because she is lonely. Do you have a neighbour you can ask to listen out if she is crying when you aer not home? If not, can you set up a recorder? Maybe she is fine when you are not home?
