Esky the husky
I've got a great new supplier to get a lot of our family's food from. Whilst going through the catalouges I noticed all kinds of game meat, all human grade, that I thought might be a nice addition to Esky's diet. I'm wondering if there are any types of game meat that pose a problem to dogs, or are they all fairly safe?
Guest Augustine Approved
Thanks for sharing Esky the husky. Do you mind naming the supplier I would be interested to see their catalogue? I would rate kangaroo meat as the number 1 accessible meat for dogs in Australia. Because it is too lean you will need to give dogs fat from other sources. The best buy I have found so far for the general public is human grade kangaroo mince is at Coles and safeway for $7.85kg.
persephone
AFAIK they are fine as part of a varied, complete diet .. roo goat deer camel pig buffalo etc.
Esky the husky
Ooh they had a camel roll in there, I want to go nuts on the stuff, but I probably shouldn't introduce a heap of new protein sources all at once. Sorry Augustine Approved , but it's a catering supply company that deals with my OH's business- he runs a cafe'. Unfortunately they don't deal direct to public, so I'll be ordering everything into the cafe and going from there. The perks of OH's job Is all game meat fairly lean- I wouldn't feed straight kangaroo as it is very very lean, and I've been led to believe that dogs need a decent amount of fat in their diets. What about crocodile? I wonder if Esky will like that. I'm guessing if this food has all been deemed fit for human consumption it'll be fine for dogs? Guest Augustine Approved
All except camel meat can be consumed by dogs. Some better than others. Camel can be fatal to dogs if the camel has eaten indigofera in the outback. It is harmless to humans. I read on another forum that a number of dogs died a few months back from eating a commercial dog food that contained camel meat. I will post a link and proper explanation when we get back from the doggy park.

Guest Augustine Approved
Apparently there are millions of camels in the Australian outback and they are being culled. Some of these camels eat indigofera which contains the acid indospicine. It is a toxic amino acid. Although there is no evidence to suggest it is harmful to humans or camels, dogs consuming meat from camels that have eaten indigofera have suffered severe liver disease and in some cases it has been fatal. A thread on another forum says a cheap barf containing camel meat killed dogs early last year. Camels run wild so there is no way of controlling which ones have been exposed to the toxin. About a year ago when I was researching meat that I could use in Augustine's Super Food I spoke to a man who deals in camel meat and he told me about the indigofera problem. He pointed me in the direction of a member of parliament that verified this to be true and correct. After he explained that research needs to be carried out (which is very expensive and no one will fund), I decided it was better to be safe than sorry. Until they find a way to control or test which camels have been exposed to the toxin I would not use it. It is a shame because it is a good meat that is being culled anyway. Guest Augustine Approved
Esky the husky to answer your question about the meats being lean... Game meats will all be reasonably high in protein and generally low in fat. From memory and I could be wrong, buffalo may have a very high fat content. Anyone? I would personally avoid pig and wouldn't not give Augustine just plain meat unless it was in the form of fresh bones. For a fresh food diet it would not be advised to let your dog's daily intake sink below 5% fat & 15% protein (adult dogs). If you choose to use lean meats there are many ways to make up the extra % of fat lacking in the meat portion of their diet. When calculating the fat content, remember to take into account everything your dog will eat for the day, not just the staple diet. Enjoy ;)
Esky the husky
You're a champ Augustine Approved. Honestly if I spent as much time analysing and worried about my own diet as I did Esky's I'd be the healthiest person ever I didn't realise you had your own pet food business until I clicked on your profile. If you have a business you would be able to use the same supplier I have if you wanted too I wish you weren't over in Vic, I'd love to try your food out. Gallomph
I wouldn't use wild pig meat unless it's well cooked, due to the risk of trichinella.

Guest Augustine Approved
Yes Pav Lova I agree and do the same for Augustine and Mishka... Whenever available at Coles I purchase a fresh wild rabbit carcass and cut it in half for them. It is a great meat because just like the human grade kangaroo meat there are no nasties. The benefit of fresh game meat (to my knowledge), is that it does not contain any preservatives, antibiotics, extra water to make it heavier, hormones etc. It just just pure meat. Kind of ironic you say that Esky the husky as it was only yesterday afternoon I laughed inside thinking about how much more time I spend worrying about Augustine's diet rather than my own. I can't remember the last time I made the time to eat well. Thank you for the contact I will definitely give them a call. Now you did say "I'd love to try your food out". Please be careful what you wish for as our products are not only organic but also safe for human consumption ;) Our website will be launching soon and it will include recipes and advice to help dog owners prepare fresh balanced super food that is approved by Augustine herself. Esky the husky
Esky LOVES roo. As soon as she gets a sniff of it she's already drooling. Has anyone fed beef necks before, are they ok, or too tough?
korbin13
I have one who will eat kangaroo and one who can't stand it. She actually 'dry reaches' when smelling it!
Guest Augustine Approved
Never tried beef necks, mainly because beef is the number 1 allergy prone meat for dogs and my maltese gets irritated when she has it. She loves the taste though. lol korbin13, have you tried searing it or just giving it to her raw?
Esky the husky
Well I haven't had any problems with allergies with Esky so I might give them a try. They have to be ordered in bulk though so she darn well better like them
