SwaY
I thought this may interest some of you Video of a TCI Transcervical Insemination (TCI)Transcervical insemination deposits the semen directly into the uterus. It is performed by inserting an endoscope into the vagina, visualizing the cervix, passing a catheter through the cervix, and injecting the semen through the catheter and into the uterus. The bitch does not need to be sedated or anesthetized for the procedure. Fresh collected, fresh chilled, and frozen semen can be used for a TCI. One or more TCIs can be performed per heat cycle. If multiple breedings are available, you can perform 2 TCIs or 1 vaginal AI and 1 TCI or 1 surgical implant and 1 TCI. When a vaginal AI is performed, the semen must make their way through the cervix, which presents a challenge for the semen as the cervix is filled with many folds and is often very tight. By bypassing the cervix, the semen use their energy to get to and into the egg instead of using energy to get through the cervix. Surgical insemination also bypasses the cervix, but requires anesthesia and an incision is made into the abdomen to reach the uterus. That's the way I'll be doing frozen semen AI....My local repro specialist practices this method....I'm not for the surgical AI
Blakbelgian
Wow the dog just stands there, I thought she would of moved. Haven't seen this done before, You tube can be very useful. BB
Wazzat Xolo
Thanks Sway, I have not seen this before and it was great to watch, just to know what happens, I hope when its our turn my bitch is a good as this one!
SwaY
Shimmer had two TCI's and her pups are now 9 weeks old. She is a real bitch when she wants to be, but she was ok with having it done. It is facinating to watch on the monitor as it is all happening.
lappiemum
Thats interesting SwaY. Can I ask how many did you get out of the TCI's? Edited January 5, 2012 by lappiemum
SwaY
Thats interesting SwaY. Can I ask how many did you get out of the TCI's? 5 puppies, it was done by Stewart Mason at Monash. Not bad considering 12 months earlier we thought she would have to be de-sexed due to her "special needs" uterus!

Not bad considering 12 months earlier we thought she would have to be de-sexed due to her "special needs" uterus! Thanks SwaY - ;) Stewart is very good. We're looking at doing a TCI down the track with frozen, so interested in what you had. I'm assuming though that it was with fresh semen, and ofcourse much depends on post thaw quality. But from what I have read, it would appear that the success rates for TCI vrs surgical AI are pretty much the same - the the TCI having the advantage of not involving the stress of the proceedure and post-op care. The downside is that you may use more semen than the surgical but again, it depends a lot on quality.
SwaY
Yep used fresh, will do a frozen TCI next time. The semen is only 5% of it, the rest is up to the bitch. What if the semen is the best count in the world and the bitch only releases 1 egg and it doesn't implant - Can't blame the semen or the method of AI used. So many variables every step along the way. I don't like surgical AI's.
lappiemum
Yes - it does take two to tango ;) But I know that if the post thaw isnt too crash hot it's not good news. Ideally both the girl & semen are all good & ready to go when the time is right.
LizT
Looks very much like I have seen Equine Repoduction Vets do. Surgical AI in horses is far too rich for many horse owners and AI is still not allowed in the Thoroughbred Industry. Mare in horse float, vet on tail gate, Ultra sound machine on 44 gallon drum to side of tailgate, well out of kicking range and away we go. Time and time again I have heard people comment on the higher sucess rate of fresh versus frozen?
