Her Majesty Dogmad
My boss has a Dachsie boy aged about 8 months. He's been desexed but he is constantly licking at his penis, making it sore. If he'd got a rash on his stomach I would have diagnosed a plant or similar but there isn't anything like that, he's just constantly at it. I wondered if anyone else had this or if someone might have an idea what it's about? Edited January 31, 2012 by dogmad

OSoSwift
I have seen a toy Poodle with a similar issue. He had the mucosa of his penis and sheath swabbed and it came back with quite a nasty bacteria. Reasonably longish course of antibiotics and he never had the issue again. I would be seeing a vet and asking to have the area swabbed. The Poodle was desexed and under 12 months from memory. I think that was the only one I ever knew of that had the issue as well. Alyosha
Or fungal. Either way, like Dogmad says, a swab should be in order asap.
oakway
Off to the vet for a swab would be my advice also.
Her Majesty Dogmad
Sorry, I should have added she went to the vet and he couldn't find anythign wrong, I imagine he did a swab but I'll check. My old IG had a penis infection a few years ago, it was gross - and treatment was topical ointment - 3 times a day!
Guest lavendergirl
He could try bathing in Malaseb regularly and see if it relieves it.
Blackdogs
Does it drag on the ground at all? Maybe it's hitting the grass and causing grass allergies? Just a suggestion.

Her Majesty Dogmad
Posting the outcome of this - xrays have shown that he has a bony spur growing at the base of his penis, the poor little mite. He must have been in so much pain but has remained a delightful little chap.

Guest lavendergirl
Thanks for posting the outcome - its a reminder to be persistent in getting a diagnosis when something is obviously wrong. I hope this is able to be fixed - is he having surgery? Poor little guy.
OSoSwift
Thank you for the update. IT is good to see that he has a solution. Just goes to show many behvaioural issues have a physical or medical cause. Hope he is fine now.
Her Majesty Dogmad
One vet just wanted to keep giving cortisone but the other vet was more interested in getting to the bottom of the problem luckily and my boss was getting insistent.
