BB this show is NOT the twilight show, I get the twilight show is cooler because of no sun, however travelling to the show and set up is sometimes in the hot part of the day.

This is the one for Monday starting at 9am with a predicted temperature of 40 degrees. I still stand by my statement, whether it has a temp predicted to be 38 or 40 IMHO it is still too hot for dog showing or anythig else IMO. And I still believe it should be cancelled. To show inside would be like a sauna in there as the building holds the heat at the best of times in summer, after it has been roasted yesterday, and again today it will be hot in there and the air will be thick!

But then you will always have those that have to show regardless of what the high temperature is going to be.......

I am entered for the show on Monday, I will not be attending, common sense tells me to stay home regardless of whether the show goes on or not, my safety and those of my dogs is paramount. As I have a background in OH&S it is clear to me for everybody's sake what needs to be done.

Too many dog people don't really care about the welfare of their dogs only care about the chance to get that next challenge whatever the weather or conditions. Thats why shows with extreme weather forecasts like Monday should be cancelled to protect the welfare of the dogs.

How I see it - Maybe it will take an unfortunate accident / incident to happen before common sense will prevail and concrete policies are to be put in place and to be implemented ...but that is my opinion and one I see from the OH&S side and the duty of care side for all of the committee, judges, stewards and exhibitors etc .......we live in a very litigious world.

Yep and those diehards will see it as even more of a chance because a lot won't turn up due to the heat!

It's not just about the Show, if you are travelling from far these animals are often in trailers that will be blowing hot air through the vents, not in air cond cars. :mad

Just got the following in by email

Severe Fire Alert for the Mallee, Wimmera, South West and Central forecast districts

Issued at 3:50 pm EDT on Sunday 1 January 2012.

For Monday 2 January:

Extreme Fire Danger is forecast for the following forecast district:

South West

Maximum temperatures around 43 degrees, relative humidity down to 8% and winds averaging 40 km/h are expected.

Severe Fire Danger is forecast for the following forecast districts:

Mallee, Wimmera and Central

Maximum temperatures around 42 degrees, relative humidity down to 8% and winds averaging 35 km/h are expected.

It is not just being at the show that is the issue but travelling to and from the show in the heat - also the animals that you leave at home.

Cars overheat in such extreme temperatures and you may be left stranded for a couple of hours on a freeway with no shade waiting for the RACV who will no doubt be very busy. Also if travelling through rural areas or the plains surrounding Melbourne the possibilities of being affected by grass fires is not worth the risk. 43 degrees and 8% humidity is like Black Saturday.

There is no doubt at all that there will always be some people who go if they think the scratching will be heavy as it means an easy win. The VCA should have a firm heat policy of cancelling the show in extreme heat - especially when the temperatures are as high as forecast for tomorrow. The welfare of dogs should be above a blue ribbon.

It is beyond me that people would even contemplate going to a dog show in such conditions.

I don't need anyone to make the decision for me - I have my own heat policy. It it's too

b.....y hot - then I don't go!!!

I cannot think of any good reason to subject my loved animals to those conditions, not matter

how much people say that they are comfortable and in the shade! They would all be better off

at home.

It is ridiculous that the controlling body has to make a decision for its members - for heaven's

sake, be responsible owners, and do the right thing by your animals...and yourself!

Off the soapbox!

I agree Gael but the sad thing is that there are people who will not do the right thing by their animals and a heat policy would protect these animals from the selfishness of their owners. We have rules about EVERYTHING - except something that puts the dogs at risk!

Before tarnishing everyone with the same brush, perhaps consider that not all dogs feel heat the same way. I live in a very hot, humid and tropical climate and have everything I need at home and for shows if necessary.

That said there are always some that aren't prepared, that are only there for points or whatever but it's the well prepared and organised ones that get tarnished when we throw around generic comments like some above.

I can only speak for me and my dogs. My dogs despise showing in the heat as do I - no point either of us being there. When it is wet and cold though they love it. If I had entered tomorrow I wouldn't be attending because we would hate it. I'm sure there are some dogs who cope well enough, I just don't own them.

Perhaps shows from Dec - March should be scheduled early or later due to the heat.

Or perhaps they will raise enough money and we can get lights at the front of KCC and have all twilight shows from Dec-March.

I was told it would cost $130,000 for lights out the front and that 17 clubs were asked if there was lights would they have twilight shows - apparently 3 clubs replied saying yes they would consider it.

Does Bulla have lights? If so could it be possible to schedule the shows that fall during the warmer weather months there for Twilight?

It is the travel to and from that stops me from entering many shows during the hot months - a couple of hours in the car each way to KCC Park(no airconditioning) is too much for either the dogs or myself. Only enter shows that have the option of good shade etc (like Lancefield) and then if the weather is going to be extremely hot I just opt to stay home. My aim is for the dogs and I to enjoy the shows.

Bulla does have lights, however we are told they are unreliable.

We wanted to have our twilight Champ show outside and was told no due to the lights being unreliable.

 I would have thought this show would have been cancelled with the forecast temperature, and as of this morning we now we have a revised temperature of 40.

Edited to add - I see that some breeds are to be judged inside, but there are a number of other breeds that are easily heat effected and they haven't been given special consideration.

Oh well, I would of hoped that due to the conditions, that common sense would have prevailed!:mad

Gael

have to agree with you all

I cannot believe that there are people going to show in 38+ degree heat.

And that is not just for the dogs either!

I thought that the ruling was that if the temp was meant to be 38* for the show the night before the show it was to be cancelled
