ktig
Just looking for a little advice. My 6 month old pup is a bit off colour. He was completely fine yesterday morning. Gave him breaky as normal then I went to work. Still fine yesterday evening when I gave him dinner. Later that evening he was pretty quiet and then at about 10pm vomitted back up dinner. Went to bed fine and seemed bright enough this morning so I assumed he must have eaten something dodgy while I was out. He has now vomitted back up breaky, is pretty quiet again and when I cleaned up the yard this morning noticed some mucous in his stools. I'm not sure whether I should be taking him to the vet or just watch him and see how he goes....what do you think? Thanks.
ktig
Oh. Just to add I know the first question will be what I fed him on chrissy...I was working (the joys of nursing....) So his diet was no different then to what he normally eats
persephone
If it were me, I'd be off to the vet ...Summertime, pup, all sorts of virus and bacteria enjoying teh warm moist weather ... chance of dehydration or serious gut problem.... best to get it looked at, and stopped before anything else develops. Tilly
I too would take him off to the vet. At that age they can go downhill so fast - and usually late at night or when the vet is closed. Tummy bugs are going around - our older boy had one not too long ago - we had it coming from both ends. Once vet has given the all clear chicken/pumkin will help with any soft or runny poos and a probiotic will help get the tummy back on track. Hopefully it isn't too serious. ktig
so I've spoken to the vet. My regular vet is closed today but opens again tomorrow, so it was a phone call to another vet who is treating emergencies over the hols. They're happy for me to keep an eye on him. as long as he's still keeping down water (which thankfully he is) try him with something bland tonight and see my regular vet first thing in the morning. He seems okay - no further vomitting, doesn't appear distressed, and is just resting. I didn't think to ask what constitutes a "bland" diet for a dog - I was thinking probably a small amount of plain cooked chicken? Would that be okay? luvsdogs
My JS puppy had the runs when I 1st got him & the vet said to fast for a day & then give cooked chicken meat & boiled rice for a few days.
Vacuna
My JS puppy had the runs when I 1st got him & the vet said to fast for a day & then give cooked chicken meat & boiled rice for a few days. Had the same problem Christmas eve - 5 month old pup I had here for over a week had a very loose and slimy poo. She also threw up so to be on the safe side I isolated her from the others in a large crate (to keep an eye on what she was outputting as well). She seemed bright enough in herself so I didn't feed her for the rest of the day, she only had access to water. In the morning was full of beans although I still kept her away from the others till later in the day after she had eaten some cooked chicken and there had been no more observed problems. She still was a bit loose but not worryingly so and was full of beans. I guessed she may have eaten something (chook, duck, goat, sheep or cow manure might not have agreed with her)or otherwise picked up a bug but none of the others showed any symptoms. If she hadn't been so bouncy I would have been off to the Vet but decided to give it a day and observe her due to it being Xmas eve and also having a teenager sick running a fever. Both have bounced back - pup quickest as teenager looks to have German measles and it is count the dots!!!
ktig
Poor little Paddy started vomitting up the bland dinner as well- spoke to the vet again and they wanted him in as they were thinking maybe an obstruction. Thankfully the xray said otherwise and they'll just keep him overnight to give him some fluids as he's a little dry, although not too bad as he was still managing to keep water down. They'll try him again with some food in the morning. Please keep all fingers and paws crossed the little guy is well enough to come home then - I miss him already! Tilly
Some obstructions may not show on xrays - depends on what it is ...fingers crossed he is ok in the morning
persephone
yes, hopefully it's just a 'bug' ... organic matter , like cork/leaves/ fabric often does not show on ordinary Xray .... just something to keep in mind .

The vet did say that. It's still a case of wait and see. But she was happy with the way he was looking last update, so nothing to do but cross my fingers, wait and hope that he hasn't eaten anything too stupid. Puppies are such a worry! ktig
Little Paddington is doing well. Keeping down the little bits of food they've tried him with. Still not 100% on a diagnosis apparently, but he's improved out of sight. He can come home in an hour and will stay on a bland diet for a few days before working his way back onto his normal food. He's lost a little weight, but they're more than happy with him and it will be fantastic to have him home again - the house seems so quiet, I'd forgotten what it was like before he arrived. ktig
Woke up again at about 5am to little Paddy gagging and vomitting, nothing in his tummy by that time of the morning, but a very unhappy pup notheless. He seemed quite uncomfortable, crying a bit, chewing on his paws and licking at his tummy. Settled down after a little while tucked into my bed with me and his teddy bear to chew on, then he dozed back offf to sleep. We'd had the bland diet for the no. of days the vet suggested and I just about had him weaned back onto his regular black hawk kibble with still a little cooked chicken and rice in it. *sigh* I'm stumped as to a cause. Looks like we're heading back to the vet again. He's bright enough now, and managed a little chicken and rice for breaky which he's kept down so far. Poor little guy, wish I knew what the cause was!
