Alyosha
People often try to claim Ridgeback x to explain a red nose, which is otherwise considered a strong indicator of certain lines of pitbull.
mumof4girls
Yes my OH said that and is certain he has pitbull in him. I hope he traines him himself at least...
Animal House
I agree :-( but listen to this.. My OH was talking to our neighbour who brought a American staffodshire bull terrier ( hope I got that right I am not familiar with this breed :-) anyway he was asking when our pup is getting here . When my OH said 8 weeks, he was amazed as he got his pup at wait for it 4 weeks!!! No papers and byb.. I felt sick when he told me, I am still shocked.. I hope your reported the guy? No use carrying on about it unless you actually report him. It is illegal to sell pups under 8 weeks old. Alyosha
Gorilla, watch your pup's feet carefully. He has obviously been dragging his toes a little, which can be fatigue in a youngster, nutritional or a conformation fault. With those splayed feet as well however I would be supplementing with a little calcium, and some vitamin C. Kids chewable tablets are fine. Plus give him some tinned fish a couple of times a week to increase uptake of calcium. Minerals and vitamins work in conjunction with each other, like teams. And although commercial pet foods claim to have a balance included not all pups are the same and breed and individual needs will vary. Calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, vitamins A C & D are all interconnected. A lack f one will stop your pup's body from utilising another. Calcium liquid, from a good pet supplies store or your vet clinic, is the most effective and cheapest way to supplement calcium.
huski
4 weeks is nothing, especially when it comes down to the risk to the animal IMO. Four weeks (especially between 8 - 12 weeks) can be everything for a puppy! Think of the risk you are taking by doing nothing during your pups most critical learning and development period... more dogs are PTS due to behaviourial problems than parvo. Red Fox
It is not illegal to sell a pup under 8 weeks, it's a guideline (and part of the COE for ANKC registered breeders). Here in SA there are pups advertised in the paper as young as 4-5 weeks old every day. Most vets wouldn't bat an eyelid at a 6-7 week old pup. The pup is not going to be 'ruined' because it was taken a few days early. Raised well with correct socialisation he will grow up no different from any other dog. The OP has come here for advice, they already have the pup. Try and be constructive.

Whether or not the dog has 'pitbull' in him is irrelevent. Pits are lovely dogs, usually with dickhead owners. I'm unsure how your OH can be 'certain that he has pitbull in him' and what it matters..?

Or Dogue, or Lab, or Vizsla... I can't see why it matters though. If you're in Vic, you dont have ANKC papers and your dog 'looks' like a pitbull it IS a pitbull. If your not in Vic its just a boofhead crossbreed like any other.;)

I would imagine that selling a 4 week old puppy (which is what I was replying to) was unethical, and downright stupid. Obviously anyone that sells a 4 week old pup has no ethics. I stuffed up anyway saying it was illegal. I have already included in this thread that it IS ILLEGAL here in NSW to sell a pup prior to 8 weeks of age. It is not just ANKC breeder that must abide by this, it is anyone who partakes in breeding of dogs. For those that did not read the first page: According to the NSW Animal Welfare Code of Practice- Breeding dogs and cats your cousin should not have let this pup leave the litter9.1.1.1 Puppies and kittens must not be re-homed before they are 8 weeks of age. Failure to meet this standard: This Code contains both standards and guidelines for the care of dogs or cats for breeding. The standards have legal effect in three ways:• Failure to meet a standard may result in a Penalty Infringement Notice or a prosecution under Clause 20 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (General) Regulation 2006. • In more serious cases, failure to meet a standard may support a prosecution for an offence under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1979. Under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979 the person in charge of an animal is responsible for meeting the legal obligations regarding an animal’s welfare. The person in charge, who may be the owner of the animal or another person who has the care or control of the animal, for example the breeding manager or a member of staff, is legally responsible for the care of the animal, and therefore for meeting the standards of this Code. I imaging that many BYB's do sell pups too young, unvaccinated, unwormed, unmicrochipped..? In SA it is certainly not illegal to sell a pup under 8 weeks, nor is it illegal to sell the pup unmicrochipped and unvaccinated.

Stupid iPhone: above is a quote Below is my reply :-) It doesn't matter, I didn't say it did I was replying to the person that mentiond it.. My neighbour was very sheepish and possibly hinted although my OH grew up with a staffy so maybe he knows what to look for?? I was actually more concerned that being a bull breed it would need good training well any breed really but some more than others. I'm not having a go at pitbulls,if they are trained right and owners are normal lol then no probs...:-) Reporting him what would be done as the pup is prob about 12ks now... I guess your talking more about the byb getting punished? Should I ring the RSPCA or police? And I am in QLD.. edit: originally posted with iphone.. mumof4girls
Mm I don't think it is illegal here in QLD well I can't find anything that says it is.. I'll ring RSPCA anyway, I'll try to get the breeders name first...
WExtremeG
http://www.dpi.qld.gov.au/documents/AnimalIndustries_AnimalWelfareAndEthics/QldCodeOfPracticeForPetShops.pdf It just says 'should' - 12. Sale of animals12.1. Age (a) All animals offered for sale should be weaned and fully self-sufficient (able to feed themselves unaided). (b) Juvenile birds should be self-sufficient and fully feathered (moult permitting). © The minimum age of animals for sale should be: (i) dogs—eight weeks (seven weeks for large breeds) (ii) cats—eight weeks (iii) guinea pigs—four weeks (iv) rats and mice—three weeks. WExtremeG
And this is form cccq (dogs Queensland) n. I shall not - i sell or otherwise transfer from my care any puppy under eight weeks of age, after undertaking a recognised vaccination regime. I shall provide a current vaccination certificate with any dog leaving my care; Either way, I agree- it's unlikely to be a registered breeder who sold/gave away the pup so young.
