persephone
When I lived in the city a long time ago, and cats were free range .. my big ginger boy had a couple of human friends he would visit ..one a lady living in a unit , no pets allowed ..but he would spend most of the day with her,on 'his' special chair by a window , and come home when he heard me back from work . The other, a young boy a couple of houses away ..they used to have great fun together ... Rufus also used to come on short early morning walks with me & my dog .. down a few blocks, thru the park and home again ..he'd just trot along with us To wake me up, Rufus would try several things ..escalating ..until I finally got up! Mr Wilson is the same .. he will wake me gently, then , if I don't get up, he will very efficiently sweep the contents of my bedside table onto the floor. It always works! ;) Hamlet's boring :p he just lies there 'til I get up .....
dee lee
I love cats, but I love dogs more. Its pobably because my current cat is so much more high maintenance than my dog. She has always been noisy but now she is getting old, she NEVER shuts up. I am not joking. All day all night... I like the idea of getting another cat when she goes (she is 16 and intolerant of other cats), but I don't think I could risk another highly strung one. Still, I've had other less difficult cats so I know they can be such a pleasure. We will see, I'm very easily swayed when it comes to animals, if my OH wasn't so firm about it I'd have a huge menagerie! Do you think she might have dementia? There are some drugs that can help with this if you contact your vet. What sort of cat do you have? There are some pretty easy going purebreds you might want to look into if you were to get another cat. I hear the British Shorthair is a bit of a quiet, couch potato, but there are others as well, like Persians. Although, obviously there are differences in temperament within a breed as well, so you might have to be careful to pick the right cat! She is a blue rescue moggy, & she has always been nuts. The constant miaowing isn't new, it's just more noticeable now that she is older & only stays in and around the house (yes, I'm afraid she is allowed out ) . Aside from sleeping more and venturing out less, she doesn't appear at all old, so I'd be suprised if she has dementia. Still it's worth considering. Her "sister" who we adopted at the same time as a kitten was a cross Persian tabby & she was lovely (she died a few years ago), so I have had good past experiences. If I got another like her I'd be happy. My sisters PB Burmese is divine too. Hmmm, maybe I will get another afterall...
laneka
Nope, don't particularly like cats! Owned them as a kid, had my own for almost 20 years, and found my sister's cat adorable. But they have both passed, I turned into a crazy dog lady, and don't want to own another cat! I get so much out of my dogs and never got anything similar out of the cats, so they're just something I don't want to own again. And my views on housing them have also changed. I wouldn't want a cat to roam the streets anymore, and I don't want a dedicated cat run (I do want a dog run, though!), so it's just easier not to have cats in my opinion Ahhh, you have not owned the right cat. Although I do not have a cat now, for 12 years I was owned by a Burmese. I have his ashes and on his little casket is "Linus - The Rottweiler Cat". He was the best cat, lots of fun and laughs, adored our dogs as did they adore him. Wonderful, wonderful animal and sadly missed.
TangerineDream
I have to say that I like some cats, but my heart belongs to GSPs. Rosie, maye's ragdoll type cat, has become my shadow since I lost Tango and sleeps on the bed and leaps on my lap if I sit down. She seems to know that I need her....,

Burmese can be very demanding, but they sure are entertaining! Persians are really lovely. I'm a terribly lazy groomer though, so it would have to be an exotic shorthair and I believe they're a little more lively.

Zayenah
I don't own a dog and I breed cats :D Do not like free roaming cats, more people have indoor cats or enclosures but still some people insist on letting them run free. I'll get another dog some day, but have found I am very much a cat person. I like dogs and cats equally but I find cats easier to understand. And my Ocicat retrieves a ball much better than either of my dogs do :D My all time favourite pic of Tarj, and how small he looks compared to now Edited December 16, 2011 by Zayenah
cavNrott
I liked cats until today. I was walking my two Cavaliers home when this big tabby darted out of a bush swiping and hissing at the dogs. The dogs looked at it, ignored it and we kept walking. Next thing I hear hissing so I turned around and it was following us swiping, hissing and growling at the dogs who were walking beside me and getting a bit antsy. I turned around yelling and ran at it thinking I'd scare it off. Nope, it just kept coming at us hissing, growling and swiping. I thought the only thing I could do to get rid of it was to deliver a kick but it deftly avoided my foot. I have a dodgy knee and walk in a brace so there would be no energy in the kick, had it connected. I pulled the dogs right next to me with their leads so tight I was just about choking the poor things as I tried to scare this cat away. It followed us past three houses, all the time hissing and swiping at the back end of the dogs. It only stopped when I went into my driveway. I put the dogs inside and went out to do battle with this damn cat who was still sitting at the footpath end of the driveway. As soon as it saw me coming it took off. Now I'm wary. I don't feel safe walking my dogs past the house where the cat lives. I live in a court so can't get out of my street any other way. Crossing the street won't work, the cat sometimes sits on the nature strip on the other side of the road. How do I protect my dogs from this cat. One of them is deaf and they're both gentle and wouldn't retaliate if the cat managed to claw them. I don't want my dogs losing an eye or getting injured by this cat. Help! Does anyone have any suggestions please?

sandgrubber
Take a supersoaker water pistol and hit it with water a few times!! And if that doesn't work, add a little perfume . . . or ammonia . . . depending on you emotional state. I don't really hate cats, but I hate the fact that people think it's ok to let them roam. Dame Aussie
Take a supersoaker water pistol and hit it with water a few times!! That's what I'd be doing. It amazes me that it is seemingly ok to let cats wander and harass people/dogs, yet if a dog is wandering it's the end of the world. We have a lot of wandering cats where we live and they often just block our path hissing.....luckily lunging at them has scared them all off so far. Does my head in. Tapua
Nah not a cat person dont hate them as an animal and respect they are wonderful companions - but I can live without a cat happily - we have a native tree garden with loads of birds in them - My Labs just stare at the trees whistfully but dont catch any. If we had a cat there would be no Wrens, Honey Eaters, Gallahs, Maggies, Parrots and the like. This is a cat free zone.

I have 3 cats - there are wrens & willy wagtails in the trellis , honeyeaters and parrots in the fruit trees, galahs, maggies, apostlebirds etc everywhere . :D A decent enclosure and a night time curfew works wonders. espinay2
I voted that I like dogs more than cats because my dogs are my passion. But I have always had cats around and couldn't imagine being without at least a couple of them! Our cats add an interesting counterpoint to the dogs. Just as full of personality and quirks. And in a way, the dog breed I have is reasonably 'cat like' in its tendency towards independance anyway .
