What Are The Chances

I had a similar situation two years ago with one of my girls. Scan showed no puppies but she went into a nesting frenzy on her due date, although she had no nipple development as such. However there was no puppy.

Scans can be tricky things. Hilaryo had both a vet and a repo specialist scan her bitch and both announced that there were two puppies, at the c-section they had four!

However recently I was told only one puppy on a scan and one puppy is definitely was.

Always a good idea to keep an eye on her when her due date comes round JIC.

X-Ray

Yep, agree totally ours will do x-ray from day 53 on but the closer the better as you have a better chance of seeing all the skeletons - can be hard if they are all on top of each other but all you want to know is if there are any there so def x-ray.

We had our girl booked in for scan with our usual vet but he had been called out so a new vet did the scan. Well she tried and tried but couldn't find anything, tol us to come back after day 28..............she was already on about day 30! So took her back to our usual vet the next day - he went zap zap and said 8!!! She had 9!!! We didn't pay for the first vets opinion :D

Hey, you are all giving me hope for my girl ( due Christmas day from mating ) she had an ultrasound at 28 days and vet said no puppies BUT she is a different shape so I will :crossfingers: :crossfingers: :crossfingers: and hope that he was wrong.

I would just ultrasound again the week before she is due. At that stage they would definitely not miss a puppy and it is a lot cheaper than an x-ray. I have no idea why everyone on here is so crazy about x-rays. Our vets are breeder specialists and never do them. A late ultrasound will tell you a lot more about a possible singleton than an x-ray.

I had a lab bitch come to stay here while the owner was ill. Ultra sound was completed just before she arrived and said no pregnancy. I went shopping one day and came home to find a new lab baby under the caravan in a hole with its Mum. I would get the whelping box ready - in case.

We ultrasound to merely check and confirm pregnancy.

We xray to get a good picture of how many pups we have due. When your girl gives you litters of 11 and 13, it's handy to know if there is still one to come that might be in distress.

X-ray's alot cheaper than ultrasound here - but thats not why I do them (we ultrasound at about day 35 because I need to book in time off work & x-ray at about day 54 as our girls have all gone on day 59) - we routinely get litters of 10 - 14 and I like to have as close an idea of exactly how many there are in there so that I can know when to act and how.

I use ultrasounds to confirm pregnancy, our last litter the ultrasound at 4 weeks showed

4 pups, she went onto have 8,three days early !!

friends bitch had ultrasound no puppies seen,

5 days before her "due date" the bitch looked a bit lop sided all of a sudden other than that she

didnt changed at all,

xray done revealed 1 pup, she had a ceasar a couple of days later healthy boy puppy.

I would xray just to put my mind at ease :D

Same here dancinbc. When I suggested an X-ray to determine my singletons size my Vet said there was no need as an X-ray isn't a good indication of size.

A junior vet scanned her at 28 days, found one pup. Asked me to come back two days later and let the Senior vet, who was away and is very proficient with scanning (and I think therein lies the secret - expertise is essential in that field) he only found one and the day we had her prog tested they gave me a free scan to check on the pup (s) still only one. But it was awesome watching her tiny heart beat. :) She was born that afternoon.

I think some vets just aren't very good at it.

That could be the problem. Our vets are usually no more than one puppy out on a count at 5-6 weeks. It might be different with really big litters but I have still never heard of our vets x-raying pregnant bitches. They only charge about $50 for an ultrasound, don't need to shave hair and if re done in the final days the you can see exactly where each puppy is lying and how big it is.

My bitch was sent to her breeders to have a litter. She was mated quite late in her season.

Got her xrayed vet said no puppies. She got flow back to me, got shown (had large mammary development but she had full on phantoms so nothing unusual for her)then drove 750kms home. I felt something was different but was told I was being neurotic.

Three days later at day 63 from her last mating on pup was born, luckily no issues as I had no idea she was having a baby.

If I think there is something a little different or not quite right I would U/S or Xray and keep a very close eye on them as they can hide them :)
