I'm glad the OP asked the question because I've discovered I know very little about Terriers (apart from some breed labels).

Certainly not nearly enough to make a choice of 3 top Terriers. I have some learning to do!

I can't believe the amount of people that have over looked pugs in the toy category lol

I guess you can tell when someone hasn't owned one :)

There are heaps of people here who could say the same about their own chosen breed, everybody thinks their own breed is the best and that anybody who doesn't like them mustn't know them. Sorry but not so. People just like what they like

Yeah I agree - for example I like dogs on the lean tall pointy short coated side and my lists reflect that, with a few fluffy exceptions. I don't like braccy breeds (the noises freak me out :o among other things, just not suitable for what I do with my dogs) but I understand that other people can't get enough of them.

There are lots of people who can't even name one terrier that they like but it doesn't bother me, I understand they are not for everyone.

It would be boring if everybody liked the same thing, particularly with dog breeds where there are so many different types.

You have to be a certain kind of person to appreciate a terrier.

I have been surprised at the number of people who have said Irish and SCWT though. And not at all surprised at the number of people who have said Aussies.

Interesting to see the break up.

Must say I am pleased, the Greyhound is in quite a lot of peoples favourite Hounds. I love this...but there are just so few shown, I also thought the Irish Setter would have been more to the fore.

Its all everyones opinion....

Good to see that Min Pins are in some people's lists!

I love min pins!! If I was going to get a small dog it would be between a min pin and a schipperke :D

You know what I find really interesting? How many people like the Finnish Spitz yet how few of them are around as either pets or in the show ring.

I was thinking the same about Aussie shepherds.

I see a lot because I train with someone who breeds them, but I was under the impression they weren't that common in the general population?

My second fave is the Golden Retriever and there hardly on any ones list (prob becuase there common ) but thats fine everyone has there own tastes :)

There was a lot of dogs from the Gundog group[ I could have put. I was tossing up between Lab and Golden, but in the end I chose Lab because they need less brushing :)

For me, I've had the pleasure of meeting a couple (lucky to be in the same state as what was at one time the only breeder!) and I adore them, one day I will get one :D I got to play with Pam's new little girl at the Royal this year and it renewed my love for them! Surely no one will notice if I sneak in another little reddy orange foxy looking dog :p

Oooh, fun thread.

My list isn't necessarily based on breeds I'd want to own, I'm just trying to pick the breeds I like most out of each group.

  • Cavs
  • Papillon

Terrier

  • Staffords

Gundogs

  • GSP
  • Cockers
  • Labs

Hounds

  • Finnish Spitz
  • Beagles
  • Norwegian Elkhounds

Working Dogs

Utility This one's the hardest for me to do. Only putting my top three in here, though I love the majority of Utility breeds.

  • Akita
  • Rotties
  • Can't decide between Samoyeds and Huskies

Non-Sporting

  • Frenchies
  • Jap Spitzs

I'm one of the people who really struggled to put terriers on my list :o Come to think of it, every group was hard but group 3! But I think I only counted like 2 others apart from me who like Labs and it's no big deal laugh.gif

Gotta say though, schnauzers would never have made my utility list until my parent's new addition came along. They are full of spunk! Probably wouldn't own one myself (like the majority of the dogs on my list) but they sure are fun to train!
